Guatemala has a surplus of children. It is not unusual for women to have up to ten children. Unfortunately forty-nine percent of the children under the age of five are malnourished. There are many orphanages in Guatemala that house many of children that either lost their parents or have parents that are not able to care for…
Women in the Hispanic culture are pressured by family and the men in their lives to be successful in both school and taking on the traditional rolls of a housewife. The Hispanic community is so focused on making sure Latina students become great mothers and wives that they disregard the more important and prosperous ways to succeed in life. However, women are stepping out and obtaining college degrees and making strides in changing the traditional gender roles. Latinas are becoming more aware of the economy stimulating women to challenge their traditional roles and soar above the expectations.…
Brazil is located in South America, takes up almost half of the continent, and is the fifth largest country in the world(1). Problems of poverty are prevalent in Brazil 40% of the county’s income goes to the top 10% of financially richest people where only about 1% of the income goes to the bottom 10%(1) about 35% of Brazil’s population lives in poverty(19). As of 2010 90.4% of Brazil's population is literate (17), out of Brazil’s total population approximately 50.8% are female although women only take up 43.7% of the workforce (3). Thanks to a proposal by feminist Brazilian Bertha Lutz the Commission on the Status of Women was created by the United Nations which helped to include “women as a category under international human rights.”(13). Women were allowed access to formal education as well as allowed to participate in the workforce in 1933 but it was not until 1988 that legal equality was decreed constitutionally (2). In 1985 Brazil became a democratic state and in 2010 President Dilma Rousseff is the first female to be elected in Brazil (4). .…
Now that our societies are modernized, women gain more rights through the process of democratic. Social stratification is less extreme in modern societies, meaning women…
In many cultures, men are higher than women when it comes to status and the roles of men and women are alike. For example, men are the providers, the head of the household or the family while women are the mothers, the caregivers, the cooks, the cleaners and they are behind their husband. A double standard is enforced in many cultures and that is due to Religion. Religion has a very relevant role in society and certain gender roles are justified through religion. Religion itself is a paradigm that influences the gender roles in many cultures and our society. Whether it is Christianity. Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, or Buddhism; there are specific roles for men and women that influence the way men and women are supposed to act.…
As I was breaking traditional gender norms, I was about to break Latino stereotypes additionally. On November 17th, 2016 is the day my life changed. I was dog-sitting for my uncle while my family enjoy their trip to New York when I got the email. The email read, “Congratulations, you have been accepted to Northeastern University's College of Social Sciences and Humanities.” In total disbelief, I sat down on the couch and made sure that my eyes read the correct information. Being accepted to a prestigious university is a big deal being a Latina woman. Latinas/os are the most underrepresented in high education compared to African-Americans and White students. Their enrollment rates were on average of 46% to 49% (Hernández, 2015). To included…
Women today have the right to get a higher education if they want; they are in high ranking positions within our government and military. Women today are not looked at as just a house wife, in today’s trend we are seeing more and more men staying home to run the household. Women today also do not just have jobs in a so called “women’s job”, for example if a women wants to be a welder, or a mechanic she can be. Those are two jobs that when people picture that worker it is usually a man but not anymore. Even though women have made a lot of changes the biggest thing that they are fighting for now is equal pay. A lot of the jobs tend to pay women less money than men. Female business majors, for example, earned a little over $38,000, while men earned more than $45,000 (Ellis, 2012).You see a lot of concepts or constructions of masculinity and femininity in media but not so much in society. The media has a lot for commercials that can be focused on gender related products. Even though the product is mad for a man you will not see a woman as the character in the advertising and the same for women. Now society on the other hand has evolved so that there are not gender specific roles, as a large amount of women have what was once a man’s job such as an engineer or a firefighter. When we refer to what society has deemed gender specific that is hard as the lines are somewhat blurred because gender does not play as much…
Women of Latin America were far more influential than those of Western Europe before the European period of conquest from the 1500’s until 1750. However, the time from 1750 to 1914 was a revolutionary period in Latin America, Western Europe, and throughout the rest of the world. Not only so, but it was during this time that the ideas of industrialism, imperialism, democracy, capitalism, and nationalism developed and grew. Therefore, due to the various revolutions and arising social and political conflicts and innovations, women played and increasingly larger role throughout the world. Though traditional subordination of women still existed in Western Europe, Latin American societies were less socially restrictive. However, women of Western Europe enjoyed more political rights than those of Latin America.…
Women 's studies and the early waves of feminism were initially dominated by the experiences of white middle-class women, thus leaving Latinas, like other women of color, feeling excluded or not fully represented. Outside of women 's studies, ethnic studies also left Latinas feeling the same, in that they focused on issues of racial and ethnic oppression and cultural nationalism, while ignoring the critical issues of sexism and heterosexism. Women and women 's issues were only seen as "White," thus denying Latinas and other women of color their full identity. Eventually, Latina women joined other women of color in the introduction of gender issues into ethnic studies and critical race issues in women 's studies. Their actions were taking a…
There is still some countries that do not treat women with equality, but is not like it used to be during the 1700’s. Women's equality has changed and now you can see women performing men's jobs even better. They are not considered a weaker sex by society because most women get higher education than men…
Women make up half of the world’s population today, however the role of women in history has been limited. It has been noted that Latin American women in colonial times experienced more rights compared to other women in the world. Although these women had more rights there were still gender restrictions. Women in colonial Latin America had the option of choosing two roles. These roles were to become a married woman or to become a nun. The two primary sources of Santa Rosa of Lima, and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, help explain the role and perception of nuns during this time.…
In the past, women were mainly characterized as mothers and house wives in the Hispanic culture. They had to stay home to care for their infants and provide the food for their family. Hispanic women were less educated because men were seen as the superior individuals that brought the financial stability for their family and were more educated. Traditionally, Hispanic girls were taught at an early age how to do the chores in the house. So that when they became women and got married they already knew how to be house wives. It was disrespectful if women did not follow the tradition in the Hispanic culture. Throughout the years, Hispanic women have gained rights and respect because now they have the same capacity to work and provide for their family.…
I guess in the recent past, there has been and are always been organized conventions, seminars and talk shows on gender equality all around the world. People always go as far as saying at time that what a man can do, a woman can do it and even better with solid examples attached to it like lady pilots in airplanes, ladies as presidents like in Argentina and the Philippines a year back.…
The male is still the dominant in the household and provides for the family and the female makes sure to bring up the children, cook, clean and care for every family member with her love. When analyzing what is stated in the previous paragraph, women have actually been working sense the beginning but many have failed to realize it because the women were not being paid for what they did because it was seen as their duties. Now that both genders are treated equally many men are experiencing the role that many women have taken throughout history, which requires them to care for their children, cook, clean and go to work. Although they are able to balance all of those things, men are beginning to value all that women have contributed to having a comfortable lifestyle.…
Over the course of history, not much has changed. Women got to vote and gain a little…
