One reason some parents may argue the reason their children will stay living at home till their later 20's is due to cost of living and economic difficulties.
I believe the children were never guided properly by parents showing them the value of independence, being able to take care of things by themselves and how they can apply this knowledge later making them ready for adulthood after 18. As Frank Furedi says, " There is a loss of the aspiration for independence and striking out on your own. When I went to university it would have been a social death to have seen with your parents, whereas now it's the norm" ( Furedi 4). Some solutions to this could be parents making their kids have responsibilities like paying rent, washing their own things ,and helping towards paying bills. These are simple things that would prevent so many kids in their late teens from not being prepared for life without their
parents. Most important is the culture shift of adolescence into the late 20's and the implications it can make in many ways. This immaturity can hamper children when they are involved in adult relationships especially when talking about the work place. An example of the culture shift is the change in how many adults have interest in things that normally children find enjoyable. " There's an increasing number of adults who are watching children's movies in the cinema" ( Furedi 4), as said by Furedi. Adults in their 20's and 30's watching not just children movies or shows, but playing video games is something commonly seen in this present day. This could also be a result of over baring parents not allowing their kids to make any decisions for themselves or to go outside cause they might get hurt. Parents removing the children's life experiences will become another factor to their kids immaturity and hinder them later in life. As a result, the transition of making 25 the new cut-off for adulthood has made negative affects like no longer kids having aspirations for independence, immaturity being socially acceptable, and finding children raising children. It is very important to teach children from a young age for example Willson says, " if you teach these children when their mindsets are pure and before they've been corrupted by things like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Top Gear and all these corrosive social pressures, then you get the road safety message in much earlier" ( Willson 5). The further and further we go by allowing the age of adolescence to shift we create a dynamic where adults are becoming more immature and unable to handle life and in turn they end up raising their children with the same philosophy they have. We are not getting to the root problem by changing the age only creating another problem by simply not holding children more accountable to adulthood from a young age.
