Chapter 1 – Introduction

A. Backround of the Study

Social network sites (SNSs) such as MySpace, Facebook, Cyworld, and Bebo have attracted millions of users, many of the people are using these sites in their daily practices. There are hundreds of SNSs with different purposes but their main purpose is almost the same. But the difference is how the SNSs attract other people in many different ways of using social networks. Social is also is the collective of online communication channels dedicated to community based input, interaction, content-sharing and cooperation. Websites and applications dedicated to forums, micro blogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social collection are among the different types of social media. Most of the sites are supporting the maintenance of the pre-existing social networks, but others help connect strangers connect based on shared interests, political views or activities. Some sites tend to diverse audiences, while others attract people based on common language or shared racial, sexual, religious or nationality-based identities. Sites also have features to share new information such news, photos, videos, chat, via blogging. We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to construct public or semi-public profile within a system, to be able to express ideas clearly and effectively in writing a list of other users with whom the share a connection and view their list connections and those made by others within the system.

While we use the term “Social Network Site” to describe this prodigy, the term “social network sites” also appears in the public dialogue, and the two terms are often used switchably. What makes social network sites unique is not that they allow individuals like us students to meet strangers, but instead that they allow users to talk or communicate. Students are not necessarily “networking” or looking to meet new people, instead they are originally communicating with people who are already part of their social network. After joining a social network site, users are about to identify others in the site with whom they know or to whom they have relationships. This relationship differs depending on the sites known as friends, contacts of even fans. Sometimes the term “friends” can be fake or fool because the connection does not necessarily mean friendship in the everyday basis and the reasons people connect are mixed. Most of social networking sites (well actually all of them) provide a mechanism for users to leave messages on their friend’s profiles. Some have photo-sharing or video-sharing capabilities and others have built-in blogging and instant messaging technology like Google+. You can share your thoughts or insights via Google+ and sharing photos and videos or even blogging so that other people around you will be updated so by time they open their respective accounts, they will see and read your blog.

Social networking sites have now been running for a few years now. Many critics argue that these social networking sites produce socially hidden people or promote violent behaviour. Social networks are very simple, mind destructing entertainment. There are many social networking sites which is being addicted by the children or students even in high school and college and even the elementary students.

An article published in a site indicates that the youth may be at risk for addiction to social networks. The results indicates that 45% of the sample admitted that they spent 6-8 hours per day checking social media sites, while 23% spent more than 8 hours. 20% spent 2-4 hours and only 12% spent less than 2 hours on this task. Results indicate while most college students use social media and spend many hours checking social media sites, there was a negative aspect to college students’ use of social media. At first glance this may seem like a waste of time to all of us. However it also helps students to develop important knowledge and social skills, and be active citizens who create and share content. At present, whether social media is favorable or unfavorable, many students use these sites on a daily basis. As social media sites continue to grow in our time it is our belief that technology is kinda part of today’s student daily basis. Many researchers have been doing some research on how social media influences student retention at colleges. Many parents are worried that their college students are spending too much time on Facebook and other social media sites and they’re not focusing or giving any time with their studies. Research shows that it now has 500 active million users, 50% of whom log on every day. In addition, according to a study by Online PhD, students spend roughly 100 minutes per day on Facebook. In 2007, the number of students who used Facebook was already huge. 92 percent of college students had an account. By 2008, 99 percent of students had an account on Facebook. That is quite a large amount considering the service was only opened in 2006 to everyone.

B. Statement of the Problem The main objective of the study is to investigate the effects of the social media sites on the academic performance of high school students. More specifically, this study aims to answer the ff. problems:

1. How does addiction on social media affects a student on the active performance in class?

Objective
This aims to investigate or determine the positive and negative effects of the SNSs to the students into such things that has effect to their performance in school.

Sub objective
Positive:
Social media improved our ability to absorb information.
Google and education, google has helped over 20 millionin their education using their tools. Negative:
The attention to details, attention to the pronounciation and grammar.
Social media had become a major distraction to students, because instead they’re doing their homeworks, they tend to check their facebook and twitter while studying

C. Definition of Terms
Diverse – different from each other
Prodigy – a young person who is unusually talented in some way
Aspect – part of something
Retention – the act of keeping someone or something
Critic – one who expresses a reasoned opinion on any matter especially involving a judgement of its value.

D. Scope and Limitation

The focus of this study is to investigate the effects of social networking sites on the performance of the students in school and to examine the students who use social networking sites, like facebook, twitter, and instagram. This study will be just research and will not involve statistical analysis.

E. Hypothesis

This thesis will enable the reader, analyze, evaluate and make a realization on the effects of social networking sites into one’s life. Social networking sites are fun and exciting for the students and the youth, and it has good effects as well as negative impacts to those who will expose themselves to this kind of technology, the best result can be achieved by student or individual through self-control and positive thinking.
