Chapter I “I like cars a lot. I and my friends started stealing cars over a year ago. I didn’t want to do it but we all felt we could have some fun and get away with it... I’ve been caught twice by the cops and they say if I do this again I will go to jail. I don’t like what this has done to my mom and dad. They don’t want me to hang with these guys anymore but they’re my friends… I wouldn’t do this on my own but when I’m with the guys it makes me feel good and I can do stuff.” – Ryan, 15 from www.yourlifecounts.org This case is an example of peer pressure having a harmful effect. Even though the subject has already realized that what they were doing was wrong, he still choses to hang out with his buddies as expected from a 15 year old. Teenage has a big connection from peer pressure for this is the period where a person lives his life the fullest. And when a person already experienced that, he will then develop questions and theories about the way of his life. “How can I become successful? What is my purpose in life?” This is also the period when people starts socializing with other person and gets to meet different acquaintances. But most important of all, this is when we start to have friends in our life. But because of the fact that most teenagers often feel like they are already mature, they start to think that some ways of life are wrong. They even try to think that they can get everything they want and everything they do is right. This is then the time peer pressure strikes. Peer pressure can be considered as a double-edged sword. It can be beneficial or it can be harmful depending on how you deal with it. We can all be subjects to peer pressure. It can come anytime, anywhere and to anyone. For short, it is unexpected. The weaker the emotional quality of a person, the higher the chance for him to give in to peer pressure. One
