He buys more than nine copies of the book from Paris and has them in different colors to represent his different moods. As years pass, Dorian remains as young and beautiful as he is when Basil first paints him. Rumors that he lives a dark life go around town but once people see his pure look, they do not believe the rumors. The difference between Dorian’s pure appearance and corrupt soul is pleasing to him. He uncovers the portrait and shows it to Basil who clearly recognizes it as his own work despite the horrifying and cruel changes. Dorian watches Basil with a slightly triumphant look on his face. Basil asks Dorian how this horrible thing happened and Dorian tells him he pledged his soul to stay young and beautiful forever because of what Lord Henry told him about beauty when they first met. Basil curses the portrait and wants Dorian to kneel down and pray for his forgiveness. Dorian tells him that it is too late to ask for forgiveness and starts feeling hatred towards Basil. Dorian grabs a knife and repeatedly stabs Basil until he dies. Once he is sure that nobody heard the murder he returns to the library and hides all of Basil’s belongings. He then goes out to the streets and returns soon to give the impression that he has not been home all night. He wakes his servant who tells him that Basil came to visit. Dorian replies that he wishes he had been there to see him. Dorian wakes up the next morning and feels his hatred for Basil return after remembering what happened the night before. After he eats, he calls for a distant friend and scientist, Alan Campbell. Dorian reads poetry and thinks of his past, very close relationship with Campbell while waiting for him to arrive. He starts to doubt that Campbell will show up, but his servant’s announcement that he is there relieves him of this worry. Campbell did not want to come but does because he believes it is a matter of life or death. Dorian tells him that there is a dead body upstairs and he wants Campbell to destroy the body. Campbell refuses and Dorian admits to murdering him. When Campbell still refuses, Dorian resorts to blackmailing him so he has no chance but to do it. Dorian goes upstairs to cover his portrait and finds that one of the hands is covered in blood. Campbell works all day and when Dorian returns to the room, the

Throughout Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, the sinful actions of Dorian cause Dorian himself as well as the portrait of Dorian to diminish. The portrait Basil paints of Dorian depicts an innocent, beautiful young boy who has yet to be corrupted by the influence of the world. However, as Dorian grows older he becomes debased by the thoughts of others and his own experiences. As the novel progresses, the reader loses sight of the innocent, pure Dorian and sees the cruel, corrupted Dorian. After Sibyl killed herself Dorian illustrates his corruption by claiming, “when she played so badly, and my heart almost broke. She explained it all to me. It was terribly pathetic. But I was not moved a bit. I thought her shallow” (96). Dorian no…

Lord Henry Wotton doesn’t really change at all throughout the novel, where Basil and Dorian almost change completely. Dorian goes from having such innocence and beauty to almost being lost in the idea of maintaining his youth an beauty. A lot of Lord Henry’s words are open for interpretation and almost contradict each other. Therefore, Dorian who interpreted them that way doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s what Lord Henry had in mind.…

Basil worships the painting and the man, admitting that he had once told Sir Henry that “[Dorian is] made to be worshipped” (142). The idolatry Basil feels saves him; the success he has in observing the moral duality embedded in Dorian (and humanity) destroys him. Before killing Basil as the two review the corrupted painting, Dorian reveals that “[e]ach one of us has Heaven and Hell in him” (192). Unlike Dr. Jekyll who represses his animalistic compulsions, Dorian is aware of the decisions he makes and the terrible consequences on his soul. He also makes a conscious decision to succumb to his base instincts, acting with an agency that is shocking and thrilling. In a way, Dorian acts as a form of catharsis for the reader, allowing each individual to live this wanton existence experiencing a guilty thrill in the process. The reader, too, feels the release of these pressures when Dorian effectively destroys himself when he destroys the painting. After he had destroyed what was gentle and benevolent in himself, the only thing left was to destroy the…

Throughout the novel, the characters, specifically, Basil, utilize moral ambiguity in order to deceive themselves and others. By doing so, the characters allow themselves to live guilt-free and unaware of their actions, and subsequently, the consequences. Throughout the novel, Basil repeatedly claims that he cares deeply for Dorian, and that Dorian is the best friend that he has ever had; therefore, his actions are well-intentioned. While it is true that Basil cares deeply for Dorian, he does not care for him in the way that he claims; thus, his motives are selfish. However, Basil disguises his selfishness in the flourishes of artistic brilliance, true friendship, and the love of Dorian’s ‘personality’.…

Dorian Gray becomes a monster because of the negative philosophical teachings of Lord Henry and because “Lord Henry had tempted him with the false belief that he could be the master of his own sins; in reality, the reverse turns out to be true” (Buma 5). Lord Henry is initially the most monstrous being; however, through Lord Henry, Dorian Gray becomes even more of a monster than Lord Henry. For instance, in a relationship both parties should have and show equal amounts of love and affection towards the other party. However, Dorian looks at Sybil as an item, for he uses her while she is perfect in his opinion, but when she loses her ability to act because of her overwhelming love expressed towards Dorian, Dorian ends the relationship because he selfishly was only looking after himself. As a result of his cruel behavior, Sybil commits suicide. Sybil’s suicide is not a suicide at all, for Dorian, with his cruel words, forced Sybil into such a depressed state to which she had to kill herself. Dorian was clearly acting in his own self-interest and not even taking into account the feelings of his fiancé. After she has died, Dorian selfishly tries to feel sorry for what he did, and not because he actually feels sorry, but because he wants his painting to look youthful once more. Likewise, his portrait always takes first priority in his thoughts which…

    Dorian Gray and corruption

Dorian is obviously corrupted at first by Lord Henry who tells him his beauty will not last forever, and advises him to take advantages of his beauty: “Live! Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let be nothing lost upon you”. For Lord Henry, beauty rhymes with youth and Dorian Gray should enjoy his beauty to make new experiences. Lord Henry plays a big role in Dorian corruption since he is the one who put in Dorian’s brain the idea that beauty is the only thing worthy in this world. According to Lord Henry, Dorian can do whatever he wants thanks to his beauty but it will last as long as Dorian is beautiful. Once ugly, Dorian will have to fight to obtain something in this world. These poisonous words lead Dorian to put beauty above everything. When Dorian Gray looked at his portrait for the first time it is like a revelation: “A look of joy came into his eyes, as if he had recognized himself for the first time. (…) The sense of his own beauty came on him like a revelation”. This passage could refer to the Bible when Adam and Eve eat the apple, then look at each other in a different way since they are aware of new desires... And here the snake would stand for Lord Henry. Harry is the masters of witty words which appear terribly attractive to Dorian. Moreover, as being older and scholar, Lord Henry has a peculiar way to see life. According to him women are pointless, one should not mourn a person's death (ref : Sybil) , very few people are worthy, etc. What is more, Basil Hallward is also one of the reasons why Dorian becomes corrupted as he is the one who painted and therefore revealed to Dorian his own beauty through his portrait.…
