Chapter 16 - Brigham
| | | | | | | | | 11/04/2010 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Chapter 16. Mini Case for Working Capital Management | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Dan Barnes, financial manager of Ski Equipment Inc. (SKI), is excited, but apprehensive. The company 's founder recently sold his 51% controlling block of stock to Kent Koren, who is a big fan of EVA (Economic Value Added). EVA is found by taking the net operating profit after-tax (NOPAT) and then subtracting the dollar cost of all the capital the firm uses: | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | EVA | = NOPAT – Capital costs | | | | | | | | | | = EBIT(1 – T) – WACC (Total capital employed). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | If EVA is positive, then the firm is creating value. On the other hand, if EVA is negative, the firm is not covering its cost of capital and stockholders ' value is being eroded. Koren rewards managers handsomely if they create value, but those whose operations produce negative EVAs are soon looking for work. Koren frequently points out that if a company can generate its current level of sales with fewer assets, it would need less capital. That would, other things held constant, lower capital costs and increase its EVA. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Shortly after he took control of SKI, Kent Koren met with SKI 's senior executives to tell them of his plans for the company. First, he presented some EVA data that convinced everyone that SKI had not been creating value in recent years. He then stated, in no uncertain terms, that this situation must change. He noted that SKI 's designs of skis, boots, and clothing are acclaimed throughout the industry, but something is seriously amiss elsewhere in the company. Costs are too high, prices are too low, or the company employs too much capital, and he wants

It was August 2011 and Martin Cartier, senior board member of Drowling Mountain, was beginning to feel the pressure of Drowling Mountain Ski Resort’s 2010 general meeting that was coming up in two months. Drowling Mountain had historically been the ski resort of choice for the local residents of Syracuse, New York. However, the company had recorded losses for the past two years. At last year’s annual general meeting, Cartier explicitly stated that he would bring the company to sustainable operations. He felt personally responsible for the company’s struggles, since he was the longest-serving member on the board. Management had been keen on developing a new marketing plan focused on new pricing schemes and increasing sales, but Cartier thought an advance meeting to discuss the plan with select board members would be advantageous. He held significant influence in the forthcoming meeting in October, and any recommendations that he made were likely to determine the future success of the company.Drowling Mountain Ski Resort Industry CORE IDEOLOGY PORTERS FIVE FORCES Hambrick and Fredrickson Drowling Mountain David Case, Brian Fischer,Stephanie Funkhouser, Shelby Holt, Noah Malale,…

The book of Luke is a Gospel that contains narrative, genealogy, sermons, parables, and some Prophetic oracles. Luke begins by telling us about Jesus’s parents (Mary & Joseph); the birth of His cousin, John the Baptist; Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, where Jesus is born in a manager, a common Christmas story, yet always fascinating; and the genealogy of Christ through Mary. Jesus’ public ministry reveals His prefect compassion and forgiveness through the stories of the prodigal son, the rich man and Lazarus, and the Good Samaritan. While many believe in this unprejudiced love that surpasses all human limits, many others especially the religious leaders challenge and oppose the claims of Jesus. Christ’s followers are encouraged to count the cost of discipleship, while His enemies seek His death on the cross. Passover arrives, and Jesus celebrates the traditional Seder meal with his disciples. Finally, Jesus is betrayed by one of his own (Judas Iscariot), He is tried, sentenced and crucified. Joseph of Arimathea buries him. On the third day some female followers of Jesus, including Mary Magdalene, go to his gravesite but find him gone. He resurrected and arose from the grave as He had miraculously raised others during His ministry.…

Mormonism emerged from religious ferment among the Puritan families. Joseph Smith wrote The Book of Mormon and established the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after he saw himself as a prophet in a sinful, individualistic society. Led by Smith, the Mormons hoped to preserve cohesive communities and patriarchal authority, encouraged individual success in a world of capitalist markets, and create a church-driven society that would restore religion and encourage morality. The resentment towards the Mormons was strong due to their rigid discipline, unorthodox practices, and “superstitious or magical” beliefs. One of the greatest hostilities came from the Mormons justification of polygamy, allowing men to have multiple wives. The group…

Doubting and questioning gospel principles and doctrines helps our testimonies become stronger. It is part of a normal process to doubt and question gospel doctrines. Some would have us think that we should believe every principle and doctrine of the gospel blindly, without question. This, however is not what the Lord intends for his disciples. In James 1:5 we read, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (Bible King James Version) It is important to study and pray by faith to gain personal revelation.…

It is no surprise that the Bible remains to be one of the top selling books around the world. The Bible is filled with remarkable tales of epic heroes, wisdom, and poetry. The entire book is quite astonishing because of the prophecies of the Old Testament and the fulfillment of those prophecies in the New Testament. For example, in Ezekiel 34: 23, the prophet Ezekiel foreshadows the Messiah to come. “I shall raise up one shepherd, my servant David, and put him in charge of them to pasture them; he will pasture them and be their shepherd”.…

I believe Ezekiel is revealing some of the greatest news which is we are only responsible for our own sin. This may seem odd but it’s the greatest news that we are not held accountable for our parents or our children’s sin. The central focus of Ezekiel 18 seems to be around Ezekiel’s statement in Ezekiel 18:20 NLT “The person who sins is the one who will die. This shows that we have a personal connection with our sins, which will cost us our life. Ezekiel goes on to say in Ezekiel 18:20 “…The child will not be punished for the parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins.” Ezekiel reveals that God does not hold the sins of our parents or grandparents against us but once again each person…

Ezekiel was transported in the spirit and describes the experience in Ezekiel 8. He was moved from his dwelling place outside Israel during the captivity and taken some distance to Jerusalem. Phillip experienced a similar thing after baptizing the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:39). Paul described his trip to heaven, confessing he didn’t know if he was there only in the spirit or in his physical body. (2 Cor. 12:2)…
