You would acquire software from different sources when it is more cost effective and faster. For example, if software has already been created by a company, it may be cheaper to use this “shelf-software” than to develop one in house with a company’s own programmers and IT.
2. Describe each of the following sources of software: (1) Information Technology Firms, (2) Packaged Software, (3) ERPs and (4) Cloud Computing. In so doing discuss what are the advantages and disadvantages of each.
a) Information Technology Firms: Help companies develop custom information systems for internal use or develop, host, and run applications for the customer or provide other services. This can be like a group of consultants who go out to different companies and develop custom applications for companies. This may be very expensive.
Advantage: high qualified, skill, and have lot of knowledge

b) Packaged Software – Serves many market segments. These package software range from broad ranged packages to niche packages. Some examples of these would be Microsoft Office, Anti-Virus Suites, and even things like Payroll software such as TurboTax or Quicken.

Disadvantage: useful for generic functions, but they are more difficult to customize because they are created for the mass market, rather than a single company or organization.
