Chapter 4: What is the best type of Marketing Research?
Many market researchers have their favorite research approaches or techniques, although different researchers often have different preferences. Some researchers maintain that the only way to really learn about consumers or brands is through in-depth, qualitative research. Others contend that the only legitimate and defensible form of marketing research uses quantitative measures.
Take a position: Marketing research should be quantitative versus marketing research should be qualitative.
Position taken: Marketing research should be qualitative.
People are complex in their buying habits and purchase decision-making. Consumers, do not always have the capacity to voice, or understand how they decide to purchase a particular product or service. As a result, good marketing research should delve into the consumers’ “purchase decision trees” to understand hidden motivations and influences. Good qualitative research may undercover hidden purchase agendas, hidden uses for the product, or hidden opportunities for new, yet undeveloped products. Because of the freedom afforded to both researchers in their probes and consumers in their responses, qualitative research can often be a useful step in exploring consumers’ brand and product perceptions.
The drawbacks of quantitative research, which include selection bias, response bias, and non-response, will always allow this type of research to be criticized for such shortcomings and their results discounted. Qualitative research, although having its own sets of disclaimers, closely describes the actions of consumers—that is what marketing is all about in the first place—to get someone to purchase something.

Gift 47.1 For 12 years, Theodore Alexander Buders father made substantial gifts to his minor grandchildren. Theodore Buder and his wife divorced during this period. The cash gifts, typically in the form of checks made directly payable to the children, were given to Buder with the understanding that he would safeguard the money and invest it on behalf of the children. Buder invested various amounts of the childrens money in blue chip stocks traded over the New York and American stock exchanges. Buder also invested substantial sums of the childrens money in speculative penny stocks. The stocks were purchased in Buders name as custodian for the children, as required by the Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA). At one point, almost half of the childrens money was invested in penny stocks. All the penny stocks except one suffered substantial losses. Buders ex-wife, Sartore, sued him, alleging that he had breached his fiduciary duty owed to the children under the UGMA. She sought to recover the funds lost by Buders investment of the childrens funds in penny stocks. Who wins? Buder v. Sartore, 774 P.2d 1383, Web 1989 Colo. Lexis 227 (Supreme Court of Colorado) Buder as the trustee owes a fiduciary duty to his kids in regards to how he handles the gifts. The laws states that trustee cannot use a beneficiarys money in speculative ventures and with regards to this case it specifically sais that the stocks are speculative. When a trustee breaches their fiduciary duty, they can be held personally liable so the ex wife wins as the natural guardian of the children. 48.8 Adverse Possession Joseph and Helen Naab purchased a tract of land in a subdivision of Williamstown, West Virginia. There are many ways to research better methods to operate a business. Using qualitative research, and finding the true feelings and wants of the company’s consumers, can help the company to better provide goods or services for the consumers or even improve customer interaction to reduce bad feelings about a company. Using qualitative research a company can learn of customer interests without prior insight to issues or concerns, meaning the research is not biased in the effort of getting a consumer’s opinion on a matter, but takes interest in what the organization may not already know by obtaining open ended information from the study group. Another great aspect of this qualitative research is being able to take what feedback you get from the study group and begin to provide education that can better suit the customers’ issues. Some may disagree with qualitative research as it delves into the psychology of the subject audience, the why and how if you will. I feel that because of this behavioral aspect, the qualitative research…

When defining a problem or developing an approach to a problem, qualitative research is used when we don 't know what to expect. It is also used to explore issues related to the problem and deeper into issues of interest. Qualitative research methods are things like focus groups, triads, and bulletin boards. Quantitative is conclusive, as it tries to understand how relevant it is by looking for projectable results to larger population. In quantitative research data is collected through surveys, audits, and point of purchases. Since they both provide different perspectives and complement each other qualitative and quantitative should be used. Quantitative research is used to measure the incidence of various views, and opinions in a chosen samples, and is sometimes followed by qualitative research which is used to explore some more findings. In order to effectively undertake market research on customer behaviour; such as expected prices, how they react to certain methods of research and what kind of care do the customers expect after the purchase is made, it would be best to use observation along with focus groups. Surveys, if used, should be done face to face by door knocking as it is more convenient and has a high response rate. The survey should include quantitative and qualitative type’s questions in order to get a `broader view of the customers’ behaviour. Questions could include “What do you think affects your behaviour within store?” for open ended qualitative questions and for quantitative they could be something like “How long do you expect to wait on hold for customer services?” which will give more precise data.…
