Father Mapple say “With speed he flew to my relief, As on a radiant dolphin borne; Awful, yet bright, as lightning shone the face of my Deliverer God. My song for ever shall record that terrible, that joyful hour;I give the glory to my God, his all the mercy and the power”. Father Mapple makes his sermon very moderate in order for the crewmates to understand his whole point of the crewmates should be aware of while on the ship. Father Maple wants the crewmates to know there is always a God watching and we must obey anything that he requests or would like to do and if we fail to obey God either repent your sins or be prepared for bad things to happen. This shows the crewmates some sort of social hierarchy that there is somebody out there we all must follow or obey to otherwise there are consequences we will have to deal with. Also even though the crewmates will have to worry about God watching after them they also have to treat the captain as if he’s a God otherwise there are consequences as well. For example Father Mapple says in the story“‘Who’s there?’ cries the Captain at his busy desk, hurriedly making out his papers for the Customs—‘Who’s there?’ Oh! how that harmless question mangles Jonah! For the instant he almost turns to flee again. But he rallies”. So Jonah still gives an answer to someone who is above him and …show more content…
In chapter 9 when Father Mapple gives his sermon he is talking to the crewmates who are ready to sail off into sea and giving them as much guidance as needed compare to chapter 64 Fleece addresses Stubb but also gives a sermon to the sharks that seems to quote understand what he is saying. The groups that each sermon addresses is very significant because it gives each group a task and see whether they succeed or not. When it comes to Father Mapple giving his Sermon Ishmael survives compare to the rest of the crewmates who unfortunately pass away for going against God to satisfy their captain. The sharks and all the other creatures unfortunately pass away but also fought humans till the very end. When reading theses sermons its seems the person who is addressing the issues to the group can somewhat relate to what each group is going through. For example in chapter 9 Melville says “ He said no more, but slowly waving a benediction, covered his face with his hands, and so remained kneeling, till all the people had departed, and he was left alone in the place”. This seems to show that either Father Mapple may have experienced the ship life himself or he has given so many sermons to may crewmates that it begins to give him anxiety to send people off to sea when there’s a chance that they may not come back alive.
