The novel,
Lord of The Flies, by William Golding, is about how a bunch of boys’ plane crashes, killing all adults and leaving them to fend for themselves on an undiscovered island. In
Chapter 9, chaos begins, there is a huge theme of The need for social order. The chapter starts off with Simon waking up in the woods after he had an epileptic episode. Simon come upon the
“beast” as he is staggering back to camp and he finds out that it really is just a dead human parachuter. Simon tries his best to get the news to the other boys that there is nothing to be afraid of. Simon, “...started down the down the mountain and his legs gave beneath him. Even with great care the best he could do was stagger.” This quote shows how hard Simon tried even though he was the weakest he’s been since the second day on the island. Jack threw a party and invited everyone, including Ralph, but this party turned for the worst soon in. Jack after he has fed everyone says, “‘I gave you food,’ said Jack, ‘and my hunters will protect you from the beast. Who will join my tribe?”’ This quote shows how Jack is eager for power. At the end of this horrendous chapter, Simon is killed by the boys, they did so unknowingly but it still happened. On the beach, “Now it touched the first of the stains that seeped from the broken body...Simon’s dead body moved out toward the open sea.” This quote explains the end of
Simon’s life. In this chapter, the boys show a great loss of civilization.

Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, is a novel about a group of adolescent boys who are deserted on an uninhabited island that lacks adult supervision after they are separated from their friends and families during a time of war in Britain. From the beginning, an older boy named Ralph, the main character, establishes a system of leadership within the small group of about twenty to thirty boys that range between the ages of five to twelve years old. Ralph, the oldest, is named the leader but one of the other older boys, Jack, thinks that he could be a better leader because he knows how to hunt which causes the two boys to bicker and argue with each other throughout the entire novel until they are rescued by a naval ship that sees…

Despite almost all of the characters going through transitions due to the changed circumstances, Golding depicts Jack as the most explicit figure. “Jack and Ralph smiled at each other…The point tore the skin and flesh over Ralph’s ribs”. Initially, when Jack first shows up on the island, we realize that he is a leader of a choir, marching in military style. Although this foreshadows Jack’s totalitarianism and dictatorship, it still shows the typical characteristics of a typical teenage boy, wanting to take on leadership roles and smiling whenever possible. However, as Jack becomes obsessed with hunting pigs and eventually putting on the mask, he turns savage and gruesome beyond return. The fact that he uses a spear to attack Ralph immediately after Piggy’s brutal death shows Jack has completely lost his rationality and sense of human being.…

As the story progressed, the line that draws the boundaries between the world of instinct and savagery contrast to the world of reasoning and civilization begins to fade. The death of Simon was meant to show the loss of peace and order as he was the only one on the island who was not afraid of “the beast” and was able to live with his mind at peace and think rationally based on reason, not instinct. I felt that the cruel fate that Simon had to endure was unnecessary brutal but I do see why the author incorporated it to get his point across, although I was a bit disturbed. I felt that the way Simon died was unrealistically brutal and I understand that it was meant to display the instinctive and animalistic behaviour of the boys when they were…

It was late and we were told to sleep. The doors locked, and the pale light of the moon shone through my room. In the room stood a sink, toilet, and a small cot. The room was made of metal, and the door had a glass window that reflected fluorescent light into the room. The window on the opposite side of the room let in the natural light of the moon.…

Unlike McMurphy, Simon does not revel his isolation and instead chooses to isolate himself further by wandering into the forest wilderness and away from the rest of the group. Simon’s seizures and shyness lead to the other older boys ignoring him when he does try to talk at their meetings, even though Simon has the most insightful thoughts out of any of them. In addition to being the most insightful, Simon also experiences an altered perception of reality when he imagines “. . . Lord of the Flies was expanding like a balloon. . . blackness within, a blackness that spread” (Golding,143-144).When Simon walks out of the forest with the body of the dead parachutist, the boys, in a social gathering of their own, immediately kill him. By not joining the other boys in the feast, Simon highlights his social isolation. This eventually leads to his death. All of the rest of the young boys, including Ralph and Piggy take part in the feast. The only boy missing is Simon, further exemplifying to what extent his social isolation reached. In this fatal feast, which Simon does not partake in, the others brutally murder him, mistaking him for the beast. Simon’s social ostracization and therefore isolation from the other boys eventually leads to his savage murder proving that when Simon is not part of the norm, because of his frequent…
