However, the information processed onto the media is not only vague, but also false, as Killer whales are constantly blamed for the cause of these deaths without a detailed and logical reasoning. For example, when the death of Dawn Brancheau was released on media, lots of information were controlled from the industry of Sea-world, and the only information was Tilikum, the orca, being violent with Brancheau during the attack. However, as claiming the truth from the documentary, Dawn had not only made mistakes such as tying her hair in a ponytail, but she was also overly confident with the training. Tilikum’s frustration could’ve been one of the reason for this attack, but trainer Brancheau had also made mistakes that lead to the cause of her death. Samantha Berg, a former Sea-world trainer also states that if Dawn was to be alive, she would’ve admitted the mistakes she had made during the training session. Thus, information as such are controlled as it could decrease the sales in their industry; this brings upon a vicious image upon Killer whales whom are frustrated of captivity. Through the vague information provided, the industry tries to hide the truth about these ferocious deaths for their own benefit; makes them unreliable and untrustworthy. Also, it has been confirmed that deaths resulting from Killer whales are predicted or expected, but no action is taken place to prevent this from occurring. Documentary and interviews state that the reason these whales are killing trainers are due to forced captivity, training, and lack of knowledge or care upon these…

Blackfish, the 2013 documentary about the attacks of killer whales provides a profound look on the miserable lives of orcas that are being held against their will. However, the film focuses on more than the “Free Willy” longings. This film is extremely emotional and somewhat graphic as it visually shows why killer whales, at numerous SeaWorld and marine parks, attack the trainers and why these whales should not be held in captivity.…

In 1983, a male killer whale was captured in the North Atlantic, at the age of 2, he was already 11.5 feet long. They named him Tilikum. Tilikum was first introduced at Sealand, at night they stored the whales in a “module”, a dark, metal 20 x 30 feet box for two-thirds of their lives. During the winter the orcas would be locked in from 5 pm to 7 am. February, 1991, Kelty Burn falls into the water, then Tilikum brings her down, and drowns her. In the newspapers it claimed that it was an accidental drowning. Sealand closed, and SeaWorld needed a breeder. So, SeaWorld purchased Tilikum. Blackfish is a documentary that follows story of Tilikum, a captive killer whale that has taken lives of several people, and presents major issues within the sea-park industry.…

The story begins with Gordy the goldfish playing at the beach with his owner. It explains how Gordy lived a great life and didn’t have any worries. “He ate, slept, swam, and did twirls in the water any time his humans approached to feed him. He never wanted for anything, especially food. Food was abundant and he was prosperous. Life was good.” Everything changed when a big wave came onto the beach and carried Gordy out to sea. He was frightened and panicked, wondering who would feed him now. Not knowing how to gather food for himself, Gordy was nearly starved when he met Sammy the shark who decided he would teach Gordy how to act like a shark and get food for himself. Sammy explained to Gordy what he needed to change in order to survive in the ocean by saying, “Your problem is that you are a goldfish. You are waiting to be fed. That’s fine during the fat times when all sorts of people are feeding you. But you’re in the ocean now. Times are a changin’. Things are a little tougher here. You have to work a little harder. You need to be a little smarter. You need to change your thinking. You need to become a shark. Goldfish wait to be fed.…

SeaWorld is considered one of the most magical places on earth. With majestic animals that aren’t seen in everyday life, come alive to please thousands of people a day. While we believe these animals are happy and enjoy the attention, Blackfish has given us reasons not to believe the false advertisement. While comparing these animals to the wild, we see that they are not as free as they should be and deserve to live in their natural habitat. One of the animals that the film focuses on are killer whales, also known as orcas, which are massive animals that like to swim for miles a day not just in circles which is what they do at SeaWorld. After watching Blackfish, I hope viewers are as sickened as I was and vow to never go.…

    Killer Whales Research

This Killer Whale, Keiko, was born in the wild and captured around the age of two. He was then sold and transferred from Iceland to an amusement park in Mexico, where he lived in a single pool without contact with any other Orcas from 1985 to 1996. The amusement park had a few bottle nosed dolphins in the same program, but for the most part Keiko was alone. Later, Keiko was conditioned to follow a boat and was taken out regularly to do open ocean swims as a part of a research study. During these swims, Keiko was in proximity of other local Killer Whales and eventually his human interaction was limited over the course of a few months. Initially, Keiko’s interaction with the wild Orcas was partial. He and the pod generally moved away from one another. After a few open ocean swims and being taken directly toward the pod, Keiko began to follow the pod within a local vicinity. The pod seemed to tolerate his presence and thus Keiko began to travel with the group. However, after Keiko’s release back into the wild, researchers studied how often Keiko approached the boat. The group reported that he approached the boat roughly sixteen times, this was with minimal interaction on the researchers’ part. (Simon) Moreover, after captivity and immense amounts of human captivity and no social interaction with other Killer Whales for a period of eleven years, releasing Keiko into the wild showed extreme behavioral differences from other wild Orcas in the area. Since the social construct of a pod of Kill Whales is extremely strong, often times outsider whales are left to swim at a certain distance from the pod. Observations were made of Keiko swimming in the vicinity of the group, but there were no observations or research made that showed Keiko apart of the social…

    The Cove

Richard O'Barry was the man who captured and trained the dolphins for the television show "Flipper" (1964). O'Barry's view of cetaceans in captivity changed from that experience when as the last straw he saw that one of the dolphins playing Flipper - her name being Kathy - basically committed suicide in his arms because of the stress of being in captivity. Since that time, he has become one of the leading advocates against cetaceans in captivity and for the preservation of cetaceans in the wild. O'Barry and filmmaker 'Louie Psihoyos (I)' go about trying to expose one of what they see as the most cruel acts against wild dolphins in the world in Taiji, Japan, where dolphins are routinely corralled, either to be sold alive to aquariums and marine parks, or slaughtered for meat. The primary secluded cove where this activity is taking place is heavily guarded. O'Barry and Psihoyos are well known as enemies by the authorities in Taiji, the authorities who will use whatever tactic to expel the two from Japan forever. O'Barry, Psihoyos and their team covertly try to film as a document of conclusive evidence this cruel behavior. They employ among others Hollywood cameramen and deep sea free divers. They also highlight what is considered the dangerous consumption of dolphin meat (due to its high concentration of mercury) which is often sold not as dolphin meat, and the Japanese government's methodical buying off of poorer third world nations for their support of Japan's whaling industry, that support most specifically at the International Whaling…

On February 24, 2010 couples and families were seated in the stadiums at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida for one of the most popular shows at the theme park “Believe”. Unfortunately, many families participating in that day’s event were eye-witnesses to an extremely traumatic tragedy at the SeaWorld theme park. It was reported by CNN news that the trainer Dawna Brancheau was grabbed by the mouth of Tilikum, the killer whale, and was thrashed around the tank until she was dead. It was also reported that the trainer was showing the audience how Tilikum liked his belly to be rubbed. He then took off from the side of the tank, came back, and picked her up from around the waist and began to violently shake her. Tourists and visitors were immediately evacuated from the “Shamu” Stadiums and the show was closed down for the rest of the day.…

This proves that stunts using orcas are not safe for the humans involved. Another example that whales are very dangerous around people is, a whale injured, and almost killed his trainer pulling him underwater and almost drowning him (F).…
