June was born and raised in San Francisco California, United States. June’s language,country setting, friends, way of living and thinking were all fragments of her American life. She rather to be called June May instead of Jing Mei. She only spoke a little bit of Chinese. Even though June looked Chinese she did not feel like one. “ All my Caucasian friend agreed: I was about as Chinese as they were” (Tan 145). She felts like a normal American woman and thought she had no Chinese in her. Her mother told her “Once you are born Chinese, you cannot help but feel and think Chinese” (Tan 145). However it wasn't until she went to China that she discovered that her mother’s words were true. “I saw myself transformation like a werewolf, a mutant tag of DNA suddenly triggered, replicating itself insidiously into a syndrome, a cluster of telltale Chinese behaviors…”(Tan 145). June experienced a self transformation during her trip to China that changed her perspective and rapidly made her understand what was Chinese about her.” I look at their faces again and I see no trace of my mother in therm. Yet they still look familiar. And now I also see what part of me is Chinese. It is obvious. It is my family. It is in our blood. After all this years it can finally be let go” (Tan 157).
