Character Analysis: Ethan Frome By Edith Wharton

Ethan Frome, a novel by Edith Wharton, is set in Starkfield, Massachusetts where a visiting engineer explains his encounter with Ethan Frome. Ethan struggles to survive with just the work on the farm and is emotionally weak constantly battling with what he wants, how to get it, or what is ethically right. Ethan is committed to care for Zeena, his wife, until she would eventually die from her health. But Zeena's cousin, Mattie Silver, moved in to help care around the house. His misguided decisions left him questioning his personal happiness and has fantasized this love life with Mattie. In the end, the feelings end up being mutual leaving Zeena with more issues then she could imagine. Ethan would be better off in the long run with Zeena because they committed vows and her way of caring. However; Mattie would make be good for Ethan because of her acceptance and willingness.
Ethan and Zeena
had married each other, in other words, their intentions, their vision, is that of which must define and shape their marriage. Getting married is a commitment before God meaning you've promised to stay and work it through, not just today but forever. Although Ethan is clearly fantasized by Mattie, he has said in his vows to God that he shall work through it all no matter how tough it will get. If divorcing, this wouldn't help Ethan's case financially. He is already struggling to get by on what he has when he is with her, imagine what all he has to give up when leaving. Ethan would also have difficulties with emotional upheaval or regret. He has no idea how everything will work out for him and Mattie or if she even has mutual feelings towards him. Ethan found himself struggling after his father had died and his mom became ill soon afterwards.
He invited Zeena to come live with them leading her to the responsibility of taking over the care of his mother as well as the household duties. This shows that she had cared not only for Ethan, but also of his family. Zeena tried to nurse his mother back to life, but also help his grieve. Zeena is also aware of this affair that Ethan is having with her, but she still lets him live in her household with the girl he is cheating on her with.
On the other hand, it can be argued that Mattie is the girl for Ethan because of her willingness and acceptance. She never just shows her feelings towards Ethan leaving us readers curious if they are mutual. But she is keeping Ethan from falling down and giving up. She also persuades this love that Ethan has for her, which can be leading because of his happiness. Happiness is an important key in life because it adds knock on effects and benefits. It is virtual to our goals in life and can help us achieve many other cherished personal
ambitions.
Throughout this book, it is unsure of who would be the right one for Ethan. It can be proven that Zeena outweighs Mattie, but Mattie has aspects that could also be a strong point of view. Ethan is struggling financially and emotionally back and forth between these two women, but is only worried about the close door of love life. He should view all his viewpoints and see what would help him survive in the end, not just happy.
