I have recently finished the book "Fever 1789" by Laurie Halse Anderson. It was filled with a roller coaster of emotion leaving the reader on the edge before every chapter. The description in the book fills my mind of how it was back in the 1700's. This book demostrats a good understanding of the environment and tone in the book. At the end of the book it shows real life sections of how Anderson used history into a fictional story. The other book i'm reading is "Night" by Ellie Wiesel. It shows a similiar dark approach to the book's setting. The book is based off Ellie's life in a concentration camp during the Nazi regime. Ellie was only just a young boy and he had to endure painful suffering. Watching the people die around you and seeing your…
Matilda Cook, or Mattie, is a 14 year old girl who is stuck in a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. Thousands died after only a month, and it wasn't long before her mother got it and sent her away to the country. All did not go well on the way there. Her grandfather got sick, prohibiting them from moving to the fever-free country land. Mattie was left to help keep him alive. Shortly after, Mattie fell ill and woke in a huge hospital surrounded by other yellow fever victims. Fortunately, her grandfather survived. However, this was only the very beginning of Mattie’s struggle to stay alive.…
Fever 1793 written by Laurie Halse Anderson is “A gripping story about living morally under the shadow of rampant death.” The story shows a part of the world that many of us don’t know what feels like. It draws you into the plot, and makes you contemplate how you would act in the life threatening situation. In the story, a young adult, Mattie, is living through the fever in Philadelphia. With lots of loss, and sorrow Mattie always finds something to look forward too. The book Fever 1793 suggests that there will always be conflict, pain, suffering, and disease in life. If you focus in on the bright side, and put the things that matter, that remind you that there are things in life better than this, you can get through it.…
All people in the world during life are faced with problems that they have to face and persevere. In the book Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson the reader is introduced to a fourteen year old girl named Matilda who has to go through all that was described. When the novel first started Matilda is introduced to an easy life. But into the book things get bad for Mattie and her family because Matilda’s mother and grandfather get the yellow fever and her grandpa dies. Towards the ending of the book matilda was running the coffeehouse and doing everything that her mother was doing. Matilda is a dynamic character but one thing about her stays the same and she goes through many challenges. She is a dynamic character because she changes from lazy…
The primary theme of the story is that a good person (like Phoenix) will do her duty and fulfill her obligations no matter how hard it is to do so. She really has a hard time getting to town, but she will do it because her grandson needs her – she is all the family he has.…
You see it in everyday life; many ordinary people have very difficult decisions to make that will shape their life. For example, Ann from “The Painted Door” is shown as a protagonist because of the way her character is, she is very lonely, depressed and sad and what she does because of these feelings affects her life tremendously. Paul, from “Lamp at Noon”, is also shown as the protagonist because he is doing his best to support his family and make a living for them, but gets no appreciation for it. The protagonists, antagonists and secondary characters shape the story and each character influences the story in a tremendous way. The two stories illustrate similarities in character to show that loneliness can have a huge impact on life and promote bad choices.…
1. Analyze 2 main character traits of the main character. Provide examples from the story. My book is called Goosebumps by R.L Stine.…
Good morning/afternoon everyone. I am Mrs Henry Lafayette Dubose. Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the author has created me as an old, ill, widowed woman who suffered an addiction to morphine which brought on my abusive behaviour. I have been portrayed by Lee as a character analogous to the 1930s in the state of Alabama. To an extent I held certain attitudes, ideas and lived a life, typical to the society of what the Deep South of America was then, although Lee has also expressed some values of mine that were not common to the values of society through my actions in the text.…
There are many ways to be brave and bold, and many people illustrate it in their own way. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee many of the characters show courage. In the 1900s, being a lawyer in the south and defending an African American is considerably an unfavorable situation to be in given the racial and political views of the early 20th century. If it was time for a trial with an African American, in this case, Tom Robinson, being accused, you could immediately predict the outcome to be against him. There was a lot of discrimination against people of color.…
Parts one and two have very different plots and contrast greatly. In part one we learn valuable information about the history of the characters and Maycomb’s ‘southern ways’, we get valuable details that prepare us as the reader for part two. Atticus, however, also prepares his children for the events of part two, such as the trial of Tom Robinson, and all of the criticism and negative comments that would be coming their way. There were many events that helped Atticus see the opportunity to teach Jem and Scout some valuable lessons. The 3 main events that helped him prepare them are the incident on Scout’s first day at school after her getting into a fight with Miss Stephanie, the unusual incident with the rabid dog, and the death of Mrs Dubose.…
Classic. A piece of work or art of recognized and established value that is known to be of the highest quality, an outstanding piece of its time. Classic novels are still appreciated as much today as they were when they became a hit. To Kill A Mockingbird is one of these novels labelled a classic. I had heard about the book several times before, I even read a book that mentioned To Kill A Mockingbird because it was so impactful on the main character. Without even reading To Kill A Mockingbird it already had importance in my life. To Kill A Mockingbird is my mom's favourite book from her childhood. She felt so connected to Scout at the time and was so excited to share her with me, knowing that I would feel the same way and Scout would have the same impact on me. But, I didn't completely understand all the details to their entirely and missed the writing between…
In the story To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, there is a character by the name of Scout. Scout is a young girl in a small town of Maycomb county. She is a tom-boy and would rather dress in overalls than a dress. Scout’s situation is similar to mine. We are similar in the sense that I am different than most people my age.…
about black maids or the “help”. Young white Skeeter made it to the not so long journey home, to Jackson, Mississippi, after graduating from college. She wants to become a marvelous and famous journalist and author. After getting a job for the local newspaper, writing about Mrs. Myrna which is about cleaning, she needed help. Her aspect changes on the help and blacks in general.…
““Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it. “Your father’s right,” She said. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” “Why not kill a mockingbird? Why kill it? These small descriptions are what make the small picture that gets you hooked and helps describe the setting. In the story To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses a mockingbird to symbolize innocence combined with details that describe how it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird which persuades the reader to think about why a mockingbird and to picture how it is to live in a small town.…

Because experiences can provide different perspectives and change how an individual has to react in different situations.
