“I have a name, I have a target, and I have my training. That should be enough”(159). This quote was written by Allen Zadoff, he is known for his young adult novels, I Am the Weapon. The quote is describing – Zach, the main character of “The Unknown Assassin” novel series. Zach is one of the best assassins in The Program, The Program is a private group and they are responsible for the safety of America citizens. The assassins The Program sends are well trained and skilled to kill, the target of the assassins are assigned from the leaders of The Program – Mother and Father. Everyone is given a code name for every mission, except Mother and Father. They are the special one, essential to The Program. This combination of clippings represents the importance of several themes, including death, betrayal, love; death has been playing a big role in this novel, people always die from natural causes, for instance, accidents and illness. Zach often approach death, especially when he is close to his target, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, from this quote we know that Zach is a strong individual (53). Another component of the themes is betrayal, Zach’s tactic of getting close to his targets is by making friends with them, and then he will kill them without any hesitation. He will dissatisfy people around him, however a mission for a soldier has to be finished, “’I haven’t disappointed you yet,’ I say. But I will when I kill your father” (144). Additionally, love is one of the most important themes in this book, as Allen Zadoff wrote “Home is the love is”(33). This describes how important your family and the special one of your life
