The Road Less Traveled By People are naturally drawn to the gruesome and horrifying; one might even claim that is part of what makes us human. We find ourselves curious despite all reason, even in times like now where have become almost numb to it. In a vision of a noble, prim, and proper Victorian house of two daughters, their step-mother and their father, no one would ever expect to see a ghastly murder; perhaps that is why this particular case has outlasted the ages. The murder of Lizzie Borden’s parents has something to offer for everyone who looks into it: murder, drama, mystery, and perhaps even a hidden romance. Firstly, despite being a wealthy family, Bridget Sullivan testified that, “the Borden family lived frugally and ate a mutton-based diet” (Bergara). Secondly, it was known that there had always been some strain between the Borden sisters and their step-mother; Lizzie and Emma Borden feared that Abbie Borden’s only goal was to extort money from their family (“Lizzie Borden”). Lastly, Lizzie’s demeanor regarding the murder was uncompelling, to say the list. She showed very little emotion at all throughout the entire court process, and at mention of some details even smiled (Begara). Lizzie had been suspected of deviant behavior even prior to the accusations of murder. Lizzie had been accused of shoplifting by several local store owners, and was also heavily implicated in a theft from Mr. Borden himself (Fourteen Reasons).
