on so the don't have a sense of fashion. All his unique quality aren’t bad but they don’t symbolizes a stereotypical man. To this Cario embodies a contradiction to what people think or might think is a modern day stereotypical man is supposed to be.
A stereotype man is supposed to have a big figure with a lot of muscles and included the man must have a deep voice.
Also he would be able to carries himself in any situation. Throughout the book the character Spade is one to resemble what a stereotypical man is assumed to be. By having a “jaw [that is] long and bony, his chin a jutting v under the more flexible v of his mouth.”p.3 which would imply that he is fit and has a muscular body. On the other hand Cario is described as “a small-boned dark man of medium height. His hair was black and smooth and very glossy.” p.42. Cairo carried on him veracious amounts of joules and very nice cloths. Carios along with dressing nicely, has “a high-pitched thin voice” p.43. The stereotype man usually has a deep voice and is a very good at doing strenuous labor. And to this the book describes Cairo hands to be very soft and well cared for. This description means that he is not usually into doing hard working labor. With all these features being described in the book about Cairo it gave him a sense of vulnerability to
him.
Cairo brings a weird sense to him as he meets with MR. Spade in his office for the first time. Nevertheless, as the conversation goes between those two, there is a pivotal point where Cario pulls out a gun on Spade and demands to look through his office for a specific artifact. Even though this seems like a manly emotion to be able to have a man at gunpoint, Cairo is quickly taken down by Spade. Even after the gun was token Spade asked Cario if he would have shot him and Cairo respond with “I Could have Shot you” but them was asked if cario would have shot Spade his reply a simple no. And soon after Spade recessives the information that Spade needs, Spade returns the gun to Cairo. However, Cairo is very sneaky, upon receiving his gun Cairo puts Spade at gunpoint again and says “You will please keep your hands on the top of the desk, I intend to search your offices”. Showing that Cairo is very sneaky, unlike the image of a man, which is that a man should always be truthful and very kind.
Through the book we see that Cairo is not able to handle spade by physically overpowering spade. So during the book he becomes partners with a man they call the fatman or Mr. Gutman. He then gives Cairo the edge that he need to be able to retrieve the Maltese Falcon that the group is looking for. However, since Spade in this book is some want portrayed as the stereotype man Cairo is still not match for Spade. So Carios depends on his wealth and deception to be able to come out on top of the whole game.
Gathering all the information up, the reader can conclude that Cairo is a very different character. These characteristics are having a small figure and being able to have a good fashion sense. Along with having a great set of jewelry and well-groomed hair and hands that don’t look like he does strenuous labor. Also being in some instances very sneaky and odd. The stereotype of a man is very different from what the character Cairo's is being portrayed as in the book the Maltese Falcon. None of the treats that Cairo has are bad yet he does not portray a stereotypical man.All the information points to Cairo being able to embody a contradiction to what people think a modern day stereotype man is supposed to be.
