Character Analysis of T. J. Avery: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry
T.J Avery

General Behavior * Dishonest – Cheats twice. First time, he stole test answers from Logan’s house when their backs were turned. Does not own up to his cheating and makes Stacey take the blame. Second time, he cheats, blames it on Mama and then runs off to the Wallaces. * Liar – Denies complaining to Wallaces about Mama, “I can’t even remember saying nothing’ about it”. Even pushes the blame to Little Willie. * Scheming/Cunning – Above points. “There’s a system to getting out of work”. * Pushes blame to others – Blames Mama for catching him cheating on purpose. Pushes blame to Little Willie for ratting on Mama. Blames Claude for going to Wallace store and gets him in trouble when it was T.J who went. * Bully – Bullies Claude (see above). Insults Stacey by calling him a “fat preacher” with his new coat. Obviously trying to make him feel insecure and spur him to give the coat to T.J. * Sore Loser/Jealous – Does not like what he cannot have. Says “I sure wouldn’t want no whistle some ole white boy been blowing on” when Stacey receives a flute from Jeremy. Also, “ y’all Logans think y’all so doggone much with y’all new coats and books and shiny new Packards”. * Insincere/ Fake friend/ Disloyal – refers to Christopher John as “my little buddy” and “you still my pal ain’t you, Little Man?” When the Logans accuse him of telling on Mama. However, after seeing their coldness, he admits that he may have said something about Mama. Inconsistent and insincere! * Arrogant – Thinks he is superior to Logans. “ What I look like, having a bunch of little kids round all the time and me here fourteen, near grown”. (Link to fake friend as he immediately raged at them after being rejected). Also, during his Revival return with the Simmses, he “proudly tugged at the suit coat” and was “rolling the Simmses’ name slowly off his tongue” to show off that he was much superior than the other Blacks. * Rebellious – “Fannie tried to whip the boy,

The book introduces us to Holling Hoodhood and his friends as they go through the thrills and wonders of being in the seventh grade. Although his love interest stands out the most to me. Building good relationships involves time and effort. John Purcell never put any effort into trying to know his son because "most of the time he was too preoccupied with other things to pay much heed to the boy's activities". He never encouraged or supported Johnny and never participated or went to any of his son's events. He did not even know what baseball or swimming team Johnny was on. When the curate, Mr. Redpath, complimented Johnny on his exceptional swimming ability, the father realized that "he seemed to know less about the boy than anyone". However, he made the excuse that his son "was only a twelve-year-old who wanted to be left alone". Because…

The main purpose of J.D. Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, is to epitomize the importance of adolescence and illustrate the benefits of a social lifestyle. Salinger achieves this meaning in multiple ways. Primarily, he uses Holden, Catcher’s protagonist, as an example of a teenager who has failed to develop during the quintessential period of youth. Additionally, by characterizing him in this manner, Salinger utilizes Holden’s desire to act both older and younger than his age to convey the dangers that come with poor decision making, as well as their consequences. Lastly, he uses the characters of Mr. Spencer and Mr. Antolini to act as voices of reason to Holden, while also showing Holden’s missed opportunities in life when he does…

Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…

While The Silence of the Lambs focuses mainly on Hannibal Lecter, the cannibalistic prisoner who offers to help FBI agent Clarice Starling on a serial-killer case, I want to first talk about Jame Gumb, aka Buffalo Bill. Although the movie is fictitious, Buffalo Bill’s method of kidnapping and murdering women was clearly influenced by many different serial killers, but not everyone realizes that the strange movie characters were based on real life serial murderers. Thomas Harris got the motivation to write the novel that would inspire this film after meeting FBI agent John E. Douglas, who is known as one of the godfathers of criminal profiling. While attending Douglas’ lecture, Harris learned about three infamous serial killers: Ted Bundy, Gary…
