Character Analysis: Penelope Aldaya and Beatriz Aguilar In the novel Shadow of the Wind, Penelope and Bea seem to have similar love stories that also, in their own way very different. Penelope Aldaya, who is in love with Julian, and Beatriz Aguilar, who Daniel falls for, seem to have similar yet different characteristics. They come from similar family backgrounds and as the novel continues, they share a willingness to risk their reputation with their family to fight to be with the men they love. The love stories started out a harmless, as they got along with the rest of their family, but as the secrets unfolded, the relationships were deadly to the families’ reputations. Penelope and Bea are similar yet different in many ways. Physically, both are pale, very pretty, and skinny. They walk with grace, almost like an angelic figure. The novel also states that Bea looks just like her mother and has red hair.”Bea Aguilar was the very image of her mother…Redheaded and exquisitely pale…” (Zafón 101). Bea is also special to her father. He held her to a very high standard. “… and the apple of her father’s eye” (Zafón 101). Because her father had so much pride in her, he was strict with her. Although not much is said about Penelope’s looks, it is possible that she is just as good looking. Aside from looks, both women are well educated. Bea goes to college to study literature, and while growing up, she attended a catholic school. Growing up, Penelope also attended a good school, but in the novel, nothing is said about her attending college, but according to her brother, she likes to read, which indicates some type of intelligence. Although the novel does indicate that Bea has another interest in science, but during that period women were thought to be incapable of learning this subject. “My father thinks science is not for the weaker sex” (Zafón 113).
