Throughout the novel, Greta and June have had a love-hate relationship but since Finn died, Greta had been neglecting June, until June says, “She rubbed her index over each of my fingernails, then she tapped her own and smiled.
‘I like the gold,’ she whispered” (TWIH 284). At this moment, Greta is trying her hardest to ease up on June and show her how much she really means to her. June realizes that Great misses the days when her and June were “mermaids” together and would play around all day, laughing, singing, and enjoying each other’s company. This is love because Greta is attempting to tear down a barrier that is between her and her sister, and June understands the “old sisters” are emerging from
inside. Lastly, the strongest love in the novel is between Toby and Finn. While Toby and June are with each other, Toby tells June about why he got arrested and how he meet Finn in prison. Toby talks about how Finn has his savoir from his other life and how Finn was able to change anyone’s life for the better, and he remembers, “There was something electric about it. So dangerous. Those little touches were everything. I lived for them. You can build a world around the tiniest of touches” (TWIH 279). I believe that this is true love because Toby had already been disowned by his family and now was in jail, but Finn somehow made all of his pain go away and make his life worth living for again. To summarize, the author uses precise detail and human like emotions to describe each character’s feelings of love, despair, and nostalgia for lost ones.
