It is true that Alexa’s mother doesn’t know about her actions, but another key point as to why the mission is dangerous is because it is on a secret military base.
Alexa and her mother find themselves on a secret military base named Puerto Marino located in Nicaragua. When they arrive to the island they soon realize how secretive the base truly is. “It appeared that with the perfunctory security measures taken care of, the guards demeanor changed profoundly” (Chapman, pg. 18). Before Alexa even enters Puerto Marino, she realizes that whatever is going on here, is not for the rest of the world to know about. As you can see, the mission is dangerous because it is on a secretive military
base.
To continue, Alexa’s clandestine mission becomes even more complicated because her actions may get her in trouble. As previously mentioned, Alexa is on a secretive military base and it’s obvious that her actions in the lab are not supposed to take place. Alexa and Jose are on the hunt for dolphin DNA and their hunt could cause some serious issues. “José- I’m afraid the guard is going to come back and catch us!”(Chapman, pg 161). Alexa and José snuck into the dolphin facility, José mentioned earlier that security comes around about every two hours. Would you risk your life to help an animal?
One could argue that the mission is not clandestine, however their assumptions are wrong. Someone who disagrees with me might say that the mission is not clandestine because Alexa informs Laurie of her actions. However, even though Laurie knows, she does not tell anyone. In addition, Alexa’s father knows about the mission, if he wanted, her father could talk with her mother and he could accidentally tell her mother but he doesn’t share his conversations with his daughter. It is for these reasons that someone who argues that her mission is not clandestine is incorrect. As you can see, Alexa’s mission is clandestine. Alexa’s mission exudes secrecy because her mother does not know about her actions, the mission takes place on a secretive military base and her actions may cause her to get into trouble. In the novel, Marino Mission Alexa hides a detrimental secret.
