People say that Canada lacks a unique identity, but Strange Brew took this opinion as a challenge with its extreme, satirical exaggeration of the stereotypical Canadian. Everything from the language to clothing is a Canadian exaggeration. The plot takes a Canadian pastime, beer, and revolves the story around it. What this really shows is the true identifier for Canadians, the ability to be at the butt end of our own joke. From the toque to the skates and all the Canadian stereotypes in between, scratch Strange Brew and it bleeds red and white.…

After watching a movie about war, or any other scary movies, have you ever imagined yourself in the position of a character? A lot of people make comments like: “I would do this instead of that! Why is he so foolish, and did not run away in the opposite direction?”. I am pretty sure that some of you had reactions like that. We are all different. People react to the same situation in many ways. Some people better in stress, emergency situations, and some are simply not. In the article, entitled “What’s in a Refugee’s Bag? See What People Carry as They Flee” which was written by Adele Peters, people share about possessions in their opinion are important to take with you in case of emergency, or when you have limited time to pack, and you have…
Every family has someone that they are especially proud of and likes to talk about. Most families have a rich and luscious history that is easy to map and find. Some families, however it is not that simple. They don’t have the luxury of going onto known web sites or libraries to find their history. Much like my family, these families when having to make reports or essays over a relative have a select few to choose from. Grandparents are the easiest because they are known and some are still alive. The grandfather I chose to write about is Nole C. Strickbine or Spike Strickbine as he preferred to be called. I chose to write about him because of his tough early childhood,…
Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive (Dalai Lama.) Grant has a battle between love and hate. Having to go back to something that he isn’t, being treated somewhat like a slave, and making the ones around him happy. He must overcome his ego and fight for something he believes in. This is a difficult task because he isn’t completely sure what he believes, or who he is yet. His mission, to affirm that Jefferson is not a hog, but a man, and this milieu, manhood, is not only subversive but also fought over throughout the book A Lesson Before Dying.…

A Lesson before Dying is a memorable novel, set in Bayone, Louisiana in the 1940’s, about an uneducated, illiterate black man, Jefferson, who is falsely accused of murder and sentenced to death. While on trial, his defense attorney likened him to a hog, calling him nothing more than a fool and a cornered animal. Jefferson’s godmother wants him to become a man before he dies. She persuades two men, Grant Wiggins and Reverend Ambrose, to visit with Jefferson and teach him what it means to be a man. While both men desire the same outcome, they disagree about what it means to be an educated man. Grant believes that his college degree gives him all the knowledge he needs. However, Reverend Ambrose…
The virtue of storytelling is an instrumental, necessary and valuable skill that ensures the comprehension of content. Storytelling, therefore, ensures that the intended message lingers in people’s minds hence ensuring that integration takes place. A good and educative story ensures that the content is consumed in an easier and efficient manner. The art of storytelling is highly demonstrated in A Long Way Gone, and this can be highly illustrated by the various myths and stories incorporated and they play a fundamental of role. The basis for this is that they are instrumental in conveying some life lessons that are vital to ensuring that Ishmael is in a position to survive on his own. This is after the bloody civil war wrecks…
The writer is a woman of mixed race and cultures; part Chickasaw Indian, and part Caucasian. As a child and also into her adult years, she often wondered at the calmness and acceptance of her Native American grandparents as they were forced to move from place to place; often losing their possessions and even much of their culture all for the sake of ‘progress’. And yet they never showed anger towards anyone. They came to understand that material belongings are not always promised and therefore, to hold on to that of true value in life: family, those close to them, heritage. These circumstances did not always make sense to the writer during her childhood and she often felt isolated and even ashamed of who she was.…
