Character Analysis: The Tell-Tale Heart
Once I finished reading the Tell Tale Heart, I was almost positive that the main character had lost his mind completely. Throughout the story, the narrator desperately tries to convince readers that he is not insane, but drops little hints throughout the story that he has a mental illness, it is possible to see that he may have schizophrenia. The Tell-Tale Heart is about a man who decides to murder an old man to get rid of his pale blue eye. Throughout the story, he believes that the eye is a danger to him. It is narrated by the killer, who tells why he decided to do commit the murder, how he did it and how he ended up confessing. The narrator does not worry about getting caught for the murder, he wants to show readers that he is sane and that he had a reason to kill the old man. However, it is kind of impossible to see this as a normal action from a healthy mind. We diagnosed the narrator with Schizophrenia. He presents three main behaviors that can be considered symptoms of schizophrenia. One of them is the delusion he has during the story. He shows signs of having referential delusions. Referential delusions are a state of mind where a person believes that certain gestures of actions are specifically directed at him or her. This is seen when he is talking to the policemen in his house after he has killed and hid the old …show more content…
Catatonic behavior can be extreme oaeaelysis of the muscles in your body or it can also be hyperactive conduct and the narrator shows both of the symptoms. When he first shows one of theses is when he getting ready to kill the old man and he says “I kept still and said nothing. For a whole hour I did not move a muscle”. Another time when he shows that he has catatonic behavior is at the end of the story when he was talking to the policemen. He says “I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides. I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon the

Shakespeare is one such playwright who explored the possibility of some characters being mentally ill. In his play Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is depicted as unstable and considerably insane. However, for this paper, I will seek to diagnose Macbeth with schizophrenia, which is a mental disorder characterized by the deterioration in one’s brain and personality as seen in a person feeling, conduct and thoughts. Beside these general character traits of a person suffering from schizophrenia, the diseases specifically results to incoherent conversations and hallucinations. All these elements of a schizophrenic are found in Lady Macbeth; hence, I assert that the Lady Macbeth is schizophrenic.…

During season three of When Calls the Heart, I often say I interviewed most of the supporting cast, and Andrea Brooks was one of those gracious individuals who agreed almost the moment I asked her. This season, when I asked her for a second interview, the girl was so busy that we only had the opportunity this past week to finally have a wonderful chat about When Calls the Heart, Supergirl, and more. I invite all Hearties to read this interview because when I say Andrea is exceptionally insightful about this beloved show, I'm not kidding. This interview covers more territory than Hope Valley and Catco combined! Moreover, interviewing the amiable Andrea was just like sitting down and chatting with an old friend.…

For example, in the story "The Masque of the Red Death", the main character, Prince Prospero, was insane. He thought that he could outrun his death by creating an ‘unbreakable' fortress. It says in the story, "It was toward the close of the fifth of sixth month of his seclusion, and while the pestilence raged most furiously abroad, that the Prince Prospero entertained his thousand friends at a masked ball of the most unusual magnificence." In another short story "The Fall of the House of Usher", the narrator, Roderick, and Madeline were all insane to different degrees. It says in the story, "I was obliged to resolve all into the mere inexplicable vagaries of madness, for I beheld him gazing upon my vacancy for long hours, in an attitude of the profoundest attention as if listening to some imaginary sound. It was no wonder that this condition terrified- that it infected me. I felt creeping upon me, by slow yet certain degrees, the wild influences of his own fantastic yet impressive superstitions." Also, Poe's story "The Cask of Amontillado" had a psychotic protagonist, Montresor. He thought that because Fortunato ‘insulted’ him, that he should deserve to die. It says in the story, "It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation."…

“Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that affects the way a person acts, thinks, and sees the world” (“Schizophrenia” 1). People with Schizophrenia perceive the world differently from the way normal people do. The way the narrator in “The Tell-Tale Heart” perceived the world in the story was very similar to how a schizophrenic may see things. This may lead people to believe that he too was schizophrenic. People with this disease suffer from delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and disorganized behavior. Throughout the story, the narrator was repeating many words, and he believed that he could hear the beating of the old man’s heart when in reality, he was just hearing the beating of his own heart. These characteristics have proven to…

The Tell - Tale Heart is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe, which was published in 1843 talking about how a ‘Madman’ let an ‘obsession’ get to him which got him into causing murder and later feeling ‘guilt’. This was during an 8th days of progress event. This book is told in a first point of view, and the narrator is the ‘madman’ himself. The central idea is the narrator has an addiction to an eye of a old man whom he lives with/looks after, the eye was described as “He had the eye of the vulture - a pale blue eye, with a film over it.”...(Poe, para. 2) and being the madman he was he was determined to kill him, just to end a ‘obsession’ he had with the eye.…
