“To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a perfect example of how the plot progression of the story was closely related to the character development. Lee used Jean Louise, also known as “Scout” as a main model of character development, as she grows through her understandings of racism, how to handle social situations and her intelligence . The plot progression throughout the novel was very close in relationship of bildungsroman in the characters personal stories. This book being fiction is not true but it depicts how life was during the time period of the 1930’s. The characters also are very close to portraying common people of the time in Macon County of Alabama.…
Courage is characterized as mental or moral strength to surpass notions of fear. As demonstrated by Atticus Finch and Mrs Dubose in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the development of courage gives the character’s strength and courage to hold their heads high, while fearing none. Harper Lee depicts the theme of courage incalculable amount of times, detailing courage as “ when you know you’re licked before you being, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Chapter 11, Page 124) All of the characters have an alternate kind of perspective of what courage is exactly, which will be examined in depth.…
Scout is by far an interesting and unordinary child in the novel of To Kill a Mockingbird. She is the main character and narrator of the story. She is the youngest child of Atticus Finch who is a lawyer and Scout also has an older brother named Jem. What makes Scouts character so special is that she changes her qualities throughout the novel. In the beginning of the novel Scout is an innocent and kind-hearted six-year old girl, only because she has not encountered the true evils of the world. As the novel progresses Scout starts to face evil encounters such as racism, and townspeople wanting to hurt her and her family. These evil encounters and Atticus’s wisdom are the reasons to why Scout has unique character traits. Scout is a fascinating character in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird because she possesses traits of intelligence, courage, and compassion.…
Maycomb was a “tired old town...there was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see...” This sentence sums up a lifestyle analogous to daily life in the south during the Great Depression. The stock market crash, Great Depression, and Jim Crow south all contributed to the tired ways of small southern towns. Minute towns and crowded cities across the United States suffered immensely during the Great Depression. This period of time remains marred by the evident poverty of the country and racial inequality and segregation.…
In the novel to kill a mockingbird they present Atticus Finch a character who seems Christ like centered. Atticus is a Christ like centered character because he has many similar characteristics to Jesus. This essay talks about three traits; loving, compassionate, caring.…
According to the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, “it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.” So, mockingbirds are harmless, innocent creatures, and killing them is wrong, because they don't hurt anyone. The mockingbird represents innocence and purity. After all it only sings for us to hear its music, they don’t bother us or harm us. So, to kill a mockingbird is a sin because you destroy innocence. Throughout the book, a number of characters like Tom Robinson, Dill, Boo Radley, and Mr. Raymond can be identified as mockingbirds.…
As most people have read the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, many have wondered, what contributes most to the story’s themes? Well, throughout the novel, there are three main literary elements that come into play. In the passage “‘It ain’t right, Atticus…”’(pg.284) to “I looked up, and his face was vehement”(pg.296), Harper Lee uses the literary element character, setting, and tone to develop the theme that recognizing perspectives contributes to coming of age. As many other themes in the novel, the theme will show a change in how Jem starts to view the world, and the major roles included in it, such as racism. But his perspective comes mostly from the kind of character he is.…
Killing a Mockingbird is a sin because it’s like snatching away a life because of it innocence. The events leading to Tom’s death happen simply because he was a black man at the wrong place and time. Tom was innocent, The all the facts proved this…
As Atticus said, “it's a sin to kill a mockingbird”, because they have done nothing to anyone but try to please. There are many people in the world and in stories that symbolize mockingbirds, that were killed innocently. There are not many mockingbirds in Maycomb County, but until Boo Radley showed up no one knew that he was a true mockingbird. Mockingbirds do nothing but try to please humans by singing, and try to help. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout goes through many hard times and learns what it is to be like a mockingbird, innocent. In the end of the book, she realizes Boo Radley is a mockingbird, just like the gray ghost, a character in a book Scout and Atticus read. Innocent.…
I believe in judging someone by their actions and character rather than by the color of their skin and sexuality. This I believe because there is good and bad in all of us. The color of our skin does not depict the flaws we have. In the second amendment it states that all men are created equal, but we still do not treat each other equally. Defending Tom Robinson was not easy because I knew that from the minute Mayella opened her mouth Tom was a dead man. But everyone including a black man deserves a second chance. How could I ever tell my own children “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” if I didn’t pick up Tom’s case because I was afraid of what people would think of me. When people say things about me like “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets” why would I prove them wrong? You are only as good as you portray yourself to be. But when you are a black man in the town of Maycomb, Alabama you were never dealt the good hand to begin with. Sadly Tom never got a second chance. Tom was a good man but because of the color of his skin he was not treated as fairly as the rest of us.…
The title of the novel and the symbolism of the mockingbird connect with the story told because killing a mockingbird is represented and shows who in the story is a mockingbird.…
During part two of To Kill a Mockingbird, the writer introduces a young African American named Tom Robinson, a kindhearted man who occasionally stops at the Ewell’s house to help Mayella Ewell with chores. One day, Mayella kisses him, but her father viciously accuses Tom of rape when in reality, Tom does nothing to harm anyone at all. During the trial when Tom is being asked questions he admits: “[Mayella] [l]ooked like she didn’t have nobody to help her [... ,] I felt right sorry for her [Mayella], she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em-.” (Lee 264) Because of his innocence, Tom sees the difficult life that Mayella lives, and he helps her do the harder chores. Unfortunately, due to his innocence, he falls into a trap where he is left vulnerable and unprotected from Bob Ewell’s wrongdoings. The townspeople target at the color of his skin and discriminate against him regardless of the truth beneath the surface. As a result, he is mistakenly accused and sentenced to die for the crime he has never committed. Thus, Bob Ewell deals the ultimate sin of killing Tom Robinson, who is a mockingbird. Overall, because Tom’s innocence leaves him more vulnerable than others, he is…
Tom Robinson was an African-American who was put to trial after allegedly raping Mayella Ewell--the daughter of a poor man. He was sent to prison even though he clearly was innocent of the rape because of his colour. Tom was a victim stuck in the middle of Maycomb’s racist society. When he was caught attempting to break free from the prison, Tom was shot and his death was compared to “the senseless slaughter of songbirds” (pg.241) in an editorial. Tom Robinson is considered a mockingbird because his innocence was shattered by the evil of racism all around him.…
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird , killing a mockingbird is a sin. There are many “mockingbirds”…
Tom Robinson is a main mockingbird in this story. Robinson is a habitual African-American man who lives with his family. Although he causes no sort of inconvenience to anyone, he is accused of sexually harassing a young Caucasian woman by the name of Mayella Ewell. There was no induced incitement for the attack—it was just assumed that any African-American man would rape any white woman, given the chance. After being imprecisely found guilty, Robinson is placed in prison. He snaps, attempts to break out in broad daylight, and is shot by a guard. Thus, a mockingbird has been killed.…
