similar qualities with Skeeter. Atticus is a man of few words; he is a peaceful man but with a much stronger fighting spirit. In order to show his fighting spirit, Atticus agrees to accept Tom’s case by saying,“I’m simply defending a Negro-his name’s Tom Robinson”(9,100). Not only the whole town but also Atticus's own daughter starts to question him but he is still willing to take the risk. Since Atticus was taking a step forward to fight against racism in his town by helping a colored man so was Skeeter by publishing the personal experience stories of colored maids. Skeeter and Atticus are one of the few figures those who will make every possible sacrifice in order to make sure that an innocent get their justice. Not everyone has inner potential to tell the world what they believe in but a few people, similar to Atticus and Skeeter, owns this quality.
Skeeter, not only helped Abillen fight against discrimination but also helped her to gain her self esteem back. Skeeter, in the movie, fights her best friend just because of her rude behaviour with their colored maids. For example, when Hilly sends a letter to the Home Sanitation Initiative to build different bathrooms for their maids, in response to this, Skeeter intentionally switches old coat to commodes in the newspaper. By performing this act of bravery Skeeter proves that she gives more value to humanity than her friendship. Skeeter knew that this would turn her every single friend against her, but she still stood up against the crowd to fight for justice. Likewise Skeeter, Atticus did put his own life at risk to save Tom. He guarded Tom’s cell because he feared that his own friends would commit the hideous crime of lynching. This scene is described in the quote where Scout narrates,¨Shadows became substance as light revealed solid shapes moving towards the jail door. Atticus remained where he was standing¨ (15,202). This narration describes that how Atticus stood still before the door even though dozens of people, with guns in their hands, were approaching him. This scene also explains how he stood against the crowd just to fight for a blameless life. Saving an innocent´s life has been the hardest and biggest act of humanity …show more content…
because it takes courage to speak up against wrong. Well, Atticus and Skeeter despite having so much in common had quite different attitude regarding their family members.
Skeeter refused to take any racist word against her childhood maid whether it was by her mother or any other loved one. Skeeter got extremely mad and upset when she heard that her mother fired her maid without a solid reason. As the movie was filmed, towards the end, Skeeter talks about writing her own story in the book and after that, she goes home and questions her mother what did Constantine do, then her mother replied she embarrassed her and left her no option than to fire her; after hearing her mother´s word she yelled at her and decide to bring Constantine home. This explains how close was Skeeter to her maid and even though she was not supposed to talk back to her mother but she did for her awful misconduct with Constantine. This scene is an perfect example to show how Skeeter respected her mother like maid and was prepared to do anything to bring her back into her life. On the other side, Atticusś own sister was passing racist comments in front of Calpurnia but he did nothing except for just standing and watching it all happen. For instance, when aunt Alexandra was abandoning the kids from going to colored people's church Atticus did not except for defending Alexandria. As described in the quote where Atticus says,¨Let's get this clear: you do as Calpurnia tells you, you do as I tell you, and as long as your aunt´s in this house you will do as she
tells you¨ (14,182). In this statement, Atticus clearly orders his children to follow the rules made by their aunt before Calpurnia. Even Though Atticus knew that Alexandria was not with the kids for as long as they were with Calpurnia, he still gave her the right to take care of his children before their mother like maid. In spite of the fact that Atticus had no problem with his children going to the church but just because he favored family relations more he gave this responsibly to his sister.
I this case, Skeeter even stood against her own mother to fight for her childhood maid but Atticus failed to support Calpurnia in his own house.
