Character and Conflict
A Good Man is Hard to Find: Character and Conflict “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, written by Flannery O’Connor, follows the summer vacation of a family in Florida coming from Georgia. While driving, the family’s car ends up in a crash after a chain of events caused by the grandmother. In an attempt to rectify the situation, the grandmother waves down a passing car, only for the passengers to step out with guns in hand. After shouting out her sudden realization that one of the men is an escaped prisoner known as “The Misfit”, the situation takes a deadly turn. In order to keep his presence a secret, the family members are taken to be killed, while The Misfit converses with the grandmother. In the middle of The Misfit talking about his life and the grandmother trying to preserve her own, it seems that the escaped criminal is on the verge of an emotional breakdown. After attempting to console The Misfit and assure him that he is a good person, the grandmother is shot and killed. The Misfit and his companions leave soon afterwards, the entire family dead. Based on the events of the story, it seems that the author is making a statement about the nature of humans and the world around them. The characters have their own perceptions of the world and ways of interacting with it. The contrasts displayed seem to play a big part in the story’s central idea. The character within the story that is perhaps the most crucial is the grandmother. The grandmother automatically comes off as self-centered and manipulative. Before the confrontation with The Misfit, the grandmother attempts to manipulate her family into driving towards Tennessee to visit old connections. Even when her attempts fail, she moves on towards visiting other locations in Florida, using her own grandchildren to get what she wants. Her self-centered ways are most notably shown when she is concerned with preserving her own life, rather than the lives of her family members, when

Important Aspects In "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" In "A Good Man Is Hard To Find," Flannery O'Connor hints that the story will involve coincidence. She tells us in the opening paragraph that the grandmother has second thoughts about traveling to Florida for a vacation because she has a bad feeling about a loose Misfit she had read about in a news article. This foreshadows the trouble to come, and coincidence advances the plot in the direction of this trouble.…

Flannery O’Connor’s A Good Man is Hard to Find follows a peculiar Grandmother as a string of events she is responsible for eventually lead to the death of her loved ones and herself. First and foremost, the grandmother, a manipulative and self-interested lady with no intention of compromising, suggests the family take their vacation through Tennessee rather than Florida, partly in an attempt to avoid a so-called Misfit who appears to be “aloose from the Federal Pen” (3) in Florida. Unfortunately, the Misfit is actually in Tennessee, and thus begins the implausible sequence of events peaking in the murder of the grandmother’s family.…

This story starts out with a grandmother who lives with her son and his family. The Family decides to drive down to Florida for a vacation even though the grandmother protests it and states that she would rather go to Tennessee. The main reason why she doesn't want to go to Florida is because she has read about a crazed killer by the name of the Misfit who is on the run heading for Florida. The story starts out normal and on a steady pace but then all of the sudden a surprising turn of events take place. In the story, A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O'Connor uses a lot of foreshadowing which hints towards how the story will end.…

Throughout the story, the grandmother’s selfish attitude is apparent. She believes from the beginning that she is the voice of reason and everything she says is right. In response to taking the children to Florida instead of Tennessee, she insists “You all ought to take them somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad. They never have been to east Tennessee” (59). However, in saying this she has no intentions on helping the children be broad, she says this so the children’s parents will take them to Tennessee, away from The Misfit. Eventually, it is this self-centered attitude that leads to the family’s demise, as she suggests that they take a detour to visit an old plantation in her neighborhood from when she was a young lady. It is in this segment of the story that O’Connor’s religious overtones come into effect. Once The Misfit and his crew of fellow prison escapees shoot the rest of the family, he and the grandmother are alone and she begins to attempt to bring him to Jesus. However, the irony at this point is that The Misfit may be more in touch with Jesus than she is. He says, “Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead,” The Misfit continued, “and he shouldn’t have done it. He thrown everything off balance. If He did what He said, then it’s nothing for you to do but throw away everything and follow Him, and if He…

Philosopher Emerson once said “every coin has two sides; so do conflicts”. In the pages of human history, conflicts are unavoidable and while major conflicts such as war have been evil forces in the world it can also produce very positive results. That is not to say conflict is entirely positive. When conflict arises there are those individuals that show unexpected qualities; those assets that are sudden and unforseen. These assets can be seen in the movie The Sapphires through the character Dave and on a global scale through Mandela. Unfortunately there are also those individuals who in the midst of conflict express unexpected negative traits. This can be seen through the characters Gail and Kay in The Sapphires and most recently through Eddie McGuire. Ultimately, until individuals are challenged we will never truly know how they will react.…

Throughout the tests of time men and women across the world have shown they really are in times of conflict. In times where the true character of a person is really put to the limit, people are able to see who they really are. These conflicts can serve to reveal unexpected qualities in an individual. Times of conflict can suddenly expose a person’s true moral fibre and the courage of their convictions. A number of people may shy away from their personal qualities, and do their best not to big note themselves, however for some, in times of strong divergence between people or even countries, a persons ability to reason with their counterpart and show elements of compromise and understanding can all of a sudden come to the fore. Conflict can inadvertently result in the discovery of a person’s true beliefs, and their ability to express them with no fear of their opposition’s retaliation. The quality to stand up for what you believe in can reveal itself in these times of disagreement, just like when Martin Luther proclaimed that he ‘Had a Dream’, he went against the grain of society and discovered his enormous will and determination to rise up for what he stands for. However these qualities are not always positive ones, and can emerge from the most brutal of circumstances. The willingness to take a fellow humans life is especially evident in times of war and terror, revealing vicious and unruly qualities in some individuals. The late Osama bin Laden has been notorious for displaying these qualities, perplexing the world at the extent of his inhumane behaviour in instances of…

Conflict can be a manipulating force that transforms those in power to uncontrollable variables beyond our imagination of moral humanity. It is the powerless that are called to rapidly adapt process and calculate these changes in order to survive. In a conflict change is inevitable for both parties involved; we are all somehow affected and shaped by conflict. In the film “Paradise Road” this concept of powerful versus the powerless is explored through the way in which the Prisoners of war were unpredictably ambushed by the Japanese which ultimately forced the women to change their ways and unite as one, instead of a group of multicultural imprisoned individuals. The women were oblivious to their capture and had the expectation to be treated with the basic human rights stated under the Geneva Convention, although their expectations were forced changed when they were faced with the harsh conditions of Sumatra. This “unexpected ambush” could almost fall under the category of Guerrilla warfare which refers to conflicts by small groups which use military tactics such as raids and the ‘element of surprise’ with extraordinary mobility to harass a vulnerable target. This form of warfare was also experienced in a more modern scenario between the years of 1975-1979 within the civil wars of Cambodia, where the peasant civilians formed a “piece group” known as the Khmer Rouge, which unexpectedly changed into a “lower class” army out to anyone who was in the “upper-class society” or who had an…

According to Pastor Tracy McConnell, in his book Conflict, Anger, and Forgiveness, there are a few key steps before confronting the conflict situation. First you have to identify yourself, “Are you the one in a conflict situation?,” “Are you asked to be a witness in the conflict resolution?,” or “Have you gone through the process and they have not admitted their fault?”. After that is established one must then move to identify the offenders in the conflict—they could be Christian, non-Christian, Atheists, etc. After you have identified the viewpoint of the other offender, next one should identify the offense or conflict. Once the conflict has been identified and clarified one should move on to deal with their anger.…
