Have you ever wondered how your personality developed? To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Maycomb, Alabama. Author Harper Lee uses memorable characters to explore civil rights and racism in the 1930s. The book is told through the eyes of a girl named Scout Finch. The Finch children and their friends are on an adventure to find out more about Boo Radley. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout Finch is coming of age. Scout learns a lot from the people that star in her life. She learns how to respect people and courage.
In Macomb, Alabama there is a girl named Scout. Scout is a pretty well-rounded kid, but sometimes since she's just a kid she can mess up. Scout learns a lot of lessons in her life from the people around her.
In fact, Scout learns to respect people and not to judge them. For example, Scout was discouraged when Miss. Caroline told her she couldn't read anymore, so she went home and told her dad. Atticus says to her, “If you'll concede the necessity of going to school, we’ll go on reading every night just as we always have. Is it a bargain?” (Lee 41). Scout learns here that she just needs to respect Mrs. Caroline and listen to her but also her dad. Also another example is when Walter Cunningham was putting syrup on his food, and Scout said something to him about it. She got in trouble, and Calpurnia had to talk to her. Calpurnia said, “Hush your mouth! Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo’ comp’ny…” (Lee 33). Scout learned that she can’t say everything that is on her mind or that she thinks; some things stay to herself. These are two examples of when Scout learns her lesson and to respect people and not judge them.
In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout Finch is very aware and knows a lot from the people in her life. Scout learns that there is a lot of courage with her dad and Miss. Maudie. For example, when Atticus is defending Tom Robinson in the trial, Atticus says “If I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this country in the legislature.” (Lee 100). Atticus is showing a lot of courage by supporting Tom when he knows there is going to be a lot of external conflict of his children. External conflict is …..
Another example that shows Scout learns courage is when Miss. Maudie says, “I am not, I have no business with the court this morning.” (Lee 213). Miss. Maudie is showing that she doesn't have any business in going because no one is treating it serious. Miss. Maudie is characterized by doing what she wants, not by what others are. These are two examples where Scout notices/learns that courage is taking place.
