I strive everyday to respect those around me and sometimes I fall short, but I always try. As a leader, if you do not respect the team members, they will have no reason to respect you. Encouragement is also an imperative skill needed to lead a group or team. Any time we do skills or give critiques, I try my best to say something good and smile so they don’t feel bad about getting critiques. I think that as a leader, it is your job to build people up and make them feel better. If someone messes a skill up or forgets part of a dance, it is your job to make sure they know that it is okay. Respect and encouragement are both part of a larger quality; maturity. If you cannot be mature, you cannnot be a leader. I admit, I have a hard time acting mature sometimes, but when that happens, the first thing I try to do is apologize. Part of giving critiques and taking them is being mature and fair. People are going to try to make you mad, but you have to be mature and let it roll off your shoulder. I think that I do a fairly good job of not letting things get to me and being mature when I am talking to someone that might be a little difficult to deal with. If you cannot take a comment or a critique well, it is going to be a hard year. My parents taught me that my opinion of myself is the only one that matters and I cannot control what others think of me, try as I might. I believe in myself and I believe that I am capable of leading this team. I am a very self-aware person; I know my limits. I know when I have done the wrong thing and I try everything in my power to make it better. I know what reaches I can push myself to and I know when to stop. I think that as a leader, you have to know your strengths, but also your weaknesses. You have to acknowledge that you are not perfect and there is room for you to improve. I am also fairly intelligent and I value grades and learning. Intelligence makes being a leader easier because people are more likely to respect you if they can look up to you in more than one aspect. However, it is important to know when to use your knowledge so you don’t come across as pretentious or stuck-up. I believe that these qualities make leading a team much easier on yourself and your
