Characteristics Of Odysseus: Not A Good Man
Odysseus, King of Ithaca leaves his son, wife, and friends to travel to the Trojan war. After 10 long years at war, it comes time to travel back home to Penelope. Ten long years of being sent places by force, and going places by choice. Being disloyal to the ones he loves, he finally makes it home to run his kingdom again: Twenty years later. Odysseus may seem like a great loyal leader, but in reality he is not. Although Odysseus is a good man by trying hard to get home to Penelope, he is also a not a good man because he stays certain places for unnecessary amounts of times and sleeps with other women.
My first reason why Odysseus is not a good man is because he doesn’t show loyalty towards Penelope. While on his way home to Ithaca and Penelope, Odysseus sleeps with Circe:

Because he’s been away from his family and kingdom for so long everyone thinks he is never coming home “In suffering for that man; / for me in relentless, heartbreaking grief for him, / lost and gone so long now-dead or alive, who knows?(Homer 4. 121-126). This is showing that Odysseus is not a good leader because he left a kingdom who needs a king, without one. Odysseus has been gone at the Trojan War for 10 years (Homer 9. 259-253). Therefore it takes 10 years just to travel home. Odysseus travels many places in which are necessary and unnecessary to go to. If Odysseus didn’t choose to go to many of the places that he did, then his journey may have turned out much different. For example, if he hadn’t bumped into Charybdis and Scylla, he wouldn’t have lost his ships and all of his men (Homer 12. 460-484). Although Odysseus comes home with none of his crew, he still is a king who returns to his kingdom “ I am son of Laertes, known to the world / for every kind of craft-my fame has reached the skies. / Sunny Ithaca is my home” (Homer 9. 21-23). Because he is a king everyone looks up to

As great as he was, Odysseus still had some weaknesses his moments of bad decisions (taunting Polyphemus, being tempted by the Sirens, staying on Circe's island, his extreme violence toward the suitors that almost causes a war between himself and his subjects once he returns home). He seems to be a very proud man, given his tendency to taunt or bait his enemies and to feel very offended when his character is put into question--for example, in Phaecia when the impudent youth says that he isn't strong enough to throw a discus and has never worked a day in his life.…

Odysseus shows loyalty like Telemakhos and Penelope to the gods and his family. Odysseus is a man that can be described as tenacious. She offers him immortality to stay with her and leave his thoughts for…

However, it can be clearly seen that his goal is just to satisfy himself and throughout his journey his deceit and dishonesty resulted in many misdemeanors. Odysseus caused his crew a great amount of trouble in many situations. Even though in difficult times, Odysseus was wise, those times would not have had to come if he had been honest and thoughtful with his actions. Odysseus lead his crew to the island of Aeolia. There the wind king gave Odysseus a bag which had all the stormy winds that would have been in their path in it. Odysseus did not tell his crew what was in the bag, so they remained suspicious about it. They then grow “curious and suspicious [and then the] sailors open the bag, thinking it contains treasure…” which results in the whole ship being blown all the way back to the island of Aeolia(Holt 673). As the reader can see Odysseus could have just told his crew what was in the bag and what was in it, instead he decides to be deceitful and not tell them. This makes his crew very curious so they open it which blows them back to the island. The author displays that Odysseus was not a very good leader because it seems that he doesn't know how to be honest and trustful or to at least use his deceit and dishonesty for a beneficial reason. Later on in the story, Odysseus leads his crew to the home of Circe, the Enchantress. After facing much…

The journeys experienced by Odysseus give him different values to represent. For instance, loyalty is given to Odysseus’ country and family; he has the opportunity to be unfaithful to his wife and rebel against his country. Odysseus also shows self-control by controlling his sexual temptations and rage toward Polyphemus. If Odysseus did not have self control, his men and him would not have made it back to their country. Lastly, Odysseus truly shows perseverance, after everything he experienced throughout his journey back home, he has never given up. “[…] what I want and all my days I pine for is to go back to my house and see my day of homecoming. And if some god batters me far out on the wine-blue water, I will endure it, keeping a stubborn spirit inside me, for already I have suffered much and done much hard work on the waves and in the fighting. So let this adventure follow” (5.219-224). During the hardest times, Odysseus came up with wise ways to survive and made it to his country and…

In addition it took both of these characters some time before they are able to serve justice to those that wrong them. Odysseus is clever in the way he will serve justice to the suitors. Instead of returning straight home, for which he desires after a long brutal journey, Odysseus does some reckoning to find those who are loyal. According to Give Me Liberty, social darwinism is the “failure to advance in society was widely thought to indicate a lack of character, an absence of self reliance and determination in the face of adversity ” (Foner, 535).Owning property became a liberty as well and many Americans had the freedom to do so. I think that so far in the story, at this point of the story, Odysseus had showed many of his characteristics, or traits throughout his actions along the sea. Some of the traits that I would use to describe him, like brave, leader, loyal, strong, smart,… With these characteristics, I can image him as a strong soldier, who is fighting for the country without escaping the death. I would want to be friend with him, but not close friend because although he was a great man, but he still have a lot of enemies since he was a soldier, and being close friend with him not only afraid of his enemies, but also goddesses since he make goddesses mad along the path when he was coming home from war.
