Characteristics of a teacher role model out of school: Teacher role models do not stop being role models out of the classroom. They make sure to live to the same educational and community values no matter where they are. They have to because they are held to higher standards than ordinary people. Teacher role models also show a commitment to their community, giving their time and help to people in need.
Exemplary reaction to an ethical dilemma: A 6 year old girl named Alyssa come to class almost every day with bruises all over her body as well as neglected hygiene. She also complains of being hungry a lot. She seems withdrawn and does not talk or participate in class. The teacher asks her consistently how she got hurt and why she is always getting hurt. The little girl always says something like she fell down, or ran into something. The teacher don’t know what to do because the little girl has not admitted to being abused, but she suspects this is happening. The teacher does not want to be wrong about the child’s well-being but decides to tell authorities about the suspected child abuse. The teacher follows policy and tells administration and child protective services. The child is removed from that home and the parents are arrested for child abuse.

One should take notice and report a child being kicked, bit, choked, shoved, hair pulled, or whipping that can be considered excessive and causes injury to a child. Whether or not, injury was intended, it is still child abuse. Bruises, scratches, cuts, broken bones, dislocated joints, and burns can be the result of child abuse. An adult who can’t or won’t explain an injury of a child or explains it with an elaborate story should be considered suspect. It is not normal for an adult to show aggression toward a child or indicate that the child is a troublemaker or evil liar. Take note if a parent or caregiver has a history of abusive behavior and/or takes the child to different doctors for treatment and frequently keeps the child from school or church.
