Characterization in a Warn Path
Characterization in A Worn Path
In Eudora Welty’s short story, A Worn Path, her use of characterization is one of indirectness. The reader never gets a vivid description of what Phoenix, the main character, looks like, nor does the reader receive the confirmation of her being a black woman. Throughout the story one is able to conclude that Phoenix is an old woman who cares a great amount for her sick you grandson. One can also infer that though most see her as old and fragile she sees herself as strong and fully capable. This is exemplified when she is about to go up the hill on her journey to town. At first she doesn’t think that she will be able to do it, but when she reaches the top she “turned and gave a full, severe look behind her where she had come.” It is a great contrast as to how the other characters she encountered treated her. They treated her as if she were going to break at any moment. The hunter suggested to her that she turn around and go back home due to the long journey to the town, but he soon came to the conclusion that she wasn’t as helpless as she seemed. The way in which Welty decides to show you who the character is throughout the book is purposeful. At fist the reader would assume that she is some old, tired, helpless woman with an umbrella as a cane, but as the reader goes along in the story he or she realizes that the woman has to make these trips pretty often, and that she is more than capable to take care of herself due to all of the things she’s seen in her

Eudora Welty's short story "A Worn Path" takes place on an early December morning which deals with a very elderly and frail black woman, Phoenix; and the hardships inherent in her life. Phoenix Jackson is the main character, she is characterized as a strong poor elderly woman because of her appearance, personality and determination. For example, the narrator states, that Phoenix wore “a dark striped dress reaching down to her shoe tops, and an equally long apron of bleached sugar sacks, with a full pocket: all neat and tidy, but every time she took a step she might have fallen over her shoelaces, which dragged from her unlaced shoes " (475). The dark striped dress and long apron made of sugar sacks symbolizes poverty because of her hardships in life; this is the type of clothing most Negro women slaves wore back in the slavery days. The darkness of her dress represents her state of depression. The stripes on her dress symbolizes the prison bars showing she was held captive as a slave for some time.…

Eudora Welty, author of A Worn Path, formated her narrator so that it would not have any part in the story other than telling it. From this, the reader is able to characterize the protagonist, Phoenix Jackson, as a woman who is very determined and loving and focused on one goal, bring medicine home to help her sick grandson. As a reader, one can tell that Phoenix is a very determined grandmother, for she had to face many challenges in order to help her grandson. On lines 35 to 37 the author describes that in order to get to her destination, Phoenix must cross over a creek on a log. The way that the author describes her going across is that she levels her cane, and fiercely marches across the log. Within the first three lines, the author states that Phoenix is “an old Negro woman.” When a person ages, then they may not be able to do as many things as…

A short story and poem, no matter how structurally different, are two literary pieces where a rich story is embedded. Readers are drawn towards these scripts by means of rhythm (poem), characterization, or a fictional setting in their respective narratives. However, the mere script would not make it entertaining enough to hold the reader’s attention. It would depend on the imagination of the readers as they are reading the story as to what they take from it. Every reader has their own way of visualizing the descriptions and symbolism used by the author. It is through imagination that the readers are able to interpret what the author is trying to depict within the symbolism and other descriptive languages. The beauty of stories and poems is that they are generated and created through the readers own imagination which consequently allows each individual reader to build their own personal connection with the literary piece. The two literary pieces “The Road Not Taken” (poem) and the short story “A Worn Path” are different in terms of actual writing styles, however they both share the same theme which is every person’s journey is greatly governed by their decisions and no matter how many paths there may be, it is still the choices that the person makes that determine the ending of his or her journey. Each one conveys a theme of life journeys and the challenges and struggles that go along with those journeys. In “The Road Not Taken” it is the journey one must make while trying to choose the right path in life. One path seemingly offers a more familiar road and perhaps the easier of the two. The other path is clearly been less traveled upon, yet yearns to be. In “A Worn Path” the journey that one woman takes on in order to care for her sick grandchild is unfolded. It is…

In the story “A Worn Path” Phoenix Jackson is the sole main character. There are a few very minor characters in the story: including the Hunter, the Doctor and the doctor’s assistant. It is made very clear from the beginning of the story that Phoenix is an elderly black woman; the author describes her appearance in great detail. “Her eyes were blue with age. Her skin had a pattern all its own of numberless branching wrinkles and as though a whole little tree stood in the middle of her forehead, but a golden color ran underneath, and the two knobs of her cheeks were illuminated by a yellow burning under the dark. Under the rag her hair came down on her neck in the frailest of ringlets, still black, and with an odor like copper.” (Paragraph 2) The author draws a clear picture of Phoenix Jackson’s appearance with this very descriptive paragraph. Not only are we able to tell that she is elderly by the author’s description of her appearance, we can also tell by how slowly she moves and the fact that she needs a cane. Another way it is apparent…

Phoenix Jackson displays a humble, Southern attitude. As an African-American woman during very racially-divided times, she was not able to receive much of an education. She uses very simple grammar in her communication to others that would be quite normal to her peers. Jackson’s humble nature is also seen through her playful monologues with various inanimate objects and animals. Jackson’s simple dialect can be seen when she states, “My senses is gone. I too old, I the oldest people I ever know. Dance, old scarecrow while I dancing with you”(Welty 139). Jackson’s simple, humble nature is clearly seen through her speech. This humble nature gives Jackson a modest attitude that adds a local feeling to the story. Jackson conveys her humble elegance again when she asks a young lady to tie her shoe for her before entering the healthcare facility. “Phoenix wants her laces tied not because she fears that she might trip over them and fall; she has walked the long path over hills and through bushes and thickets and over the creek on a log with these laces flapping. Here Miss Welty conveys Phoenix’s sense of place which demands that the laces be tied,” Mary Ann Dazey explains very clearly. Jackson was reared in a disadvantaged manner and did not have an extraordinary grasp of the mannerisms of the much more…

The protagonist in “A Worn Path” is Phoenix Jackson, a determined, uneducated, frail, and old woman who lives along the Natchez Trace. The story narrates Phoenix’s long and hard journey by walking from her home to Natchez. Phoenix states, “I’m an old woman without an education. It was my memory fail me” (171). It obviously shows that Phoenix is really a helpless and senile woman. On the other hand, Phoenix also faces antagonists both internal and external during her long journey. There are lots of external factors, such as her age, poor eyesight, cold weather, the fierce dog, and the hunter etc. However, Phoenix knows the way without being able to see because she has walked the path and hills so many times. The internal factors are her consciousness, fearless, and memory loss. She even can’t remember what she made her long journey for when she gets to the hospital. Nonetheless, Phoenix overcomes these obstacles with courage because she is determined to go to the town.…
