The Oxford Living English Dictionary defines character as “The mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.” Within the realm of literature the same word typically refers to “a person and occasionally personified animal or idea that forwards the plot in a work of literature” . It is expected that characters in a piece of writing have just that - character. In some rare cases, however, the characters in an author’s work may lack distinctive personality traits that set them apart from others.
