Introduction
Communication occurs in an organized fashion based upon a theory called constructivism (Burleson & Rack, 2008, as cited in Wood, 2013). This key belief of this theory is that we organize and interpret our experiences by applying a type of cognitive structure schemata. People use four types of schemata: prototype, personal construct, stereotype, and scripts. These are used to classify our peers and situations. Such constructs can also be applied to our intrapersonal communication in the form of habits.

The book could fall into the usual self-help trap that features feel-good fluff while doing little identify the root causes of problems and offer solutions. Duhigg succeeds because he avoids these trappings while using the book as a means to tell stories. He profiles former NFL coach Tony Dungy and his efforts to turn around the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by reshaping player’s habits on the field (Duhigg, 2012). He discusses Howard Fineman’s ability to make Starbucks an international powerhouse of a brand. He closes the book with the story of how Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., took the Civil Rights movement from an act of civil disobedience into a national phenomenon that change the course of the nation.
