Charles F.Boldon, Jr. was born August 19. 1946 in Columbia, S.C. He attended C.A. Johnson High School and graduated in 1964 where he received an appointment into the U.S. Naval Academy. This experience led to many accomplishments for Mr. Charles Frank Bolden. Paving the way for his successful career, Charles F. Bolden married Alexis (Walker) Bolden in 1968. The couple has two children. Anthony Che, a Lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps and Kelly Michelle, a plastic surgeon at Howard University Hospital in Washington. Bolden was commissioned second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Following Graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1968. He was president of his class. Bolden piloted Space Shuttle Columbia and Space Shuttle Discovery with a crew of six aboard discovery. Charles achieved 130 or bits of the Earth landing at Kennedy Space Center in 1994. Bolden was the first person to ride the Launch Complex 39. On May 23 2009, President Barak Obama announced the nomination of Bolden for NASA Administrator. The Senate confirmed Bolden on July 15, 2009. He is the first African American to head the agency on a permanent basis, [NASA.gov p.182-184] In 2010 NASA published a video, “NASA’s New Era of Innovation and Discovery.” Bolden said, “We’re going to turn science fiction into science fact.” Bolden said his agency’s long-term ambition is landing astronauts on Mars. In October 2015, Bolden presented the next steps for human journey to Mars at the Center for American Progress in Washington D.C. After reading about Dr.Charles Frank Bolden,Jr., I want to become an astronaut. His accomplishment as an African American lets me know that “The sky is the Limit.”[ NASA.gov
