When a student is told to find a university level novel to read, what are they to do but scour the Internet for “short, easy, university level novels”? After extensive research, my group chose the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. This book elicited great response from my group members and me, for its interesting plot and subject. After reading the first part, a common theme I noticed throughout the book is oppression, more specifically, political and industrial oppression.…

In comparison, Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest explores the effectiveness of threats and manipulation to control human behavior. Nurse Ratched keeps the patients in the ward completely under her jurisdiction by inducing fear and manipulating their emotions. She uses her power to pressure the patients into acting a certain way to distance themselves from her wrath, and she successfully maintains the stability of the ward. During one of the daily meetings, Nurse Ratched convinces the other patients to tell about Harding’s wrongdoings and struggles with his wife. After the meeting, Harding secludes himself, and the patients feel guilty and shameful that they had “been maneuvered again into grilling one of their friends like he…
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is not only filled with symbols and references, but with standardized mental pictures that are held in common by members of a group and that represent an oversimplified opinion, stereotypes . Some characters aren't even stereotypes, but they still get subjected to the racism and uncritical judgment that will forever remain pinned to their skin colour. Through his creative use of such characters and their interactions, Ken Kesey shows the reader the benefit of being aware of these things and how the stereotypical groups will remain in human culture.…

Sex was such a horrible topic to talk about, but a biologist of Indiana University introduced a scale that broke the silence. The silence changed due to this biologist named Alfred C. Kinsey (1894-1956). Kinsey broke the silence because before the scale everyone would keep their sexual orientation to themselves and most likely did not tell anyone. In other words, he was a great influence to people because since then people have become a bit more open about themselves. The importance of Kinsey is that he has conducted several of researches. For instance, on one of his research he found out that many people had sexual experiences with both female and male. He concluded from his research that there is diversity in sexual behaviors. Therefore, he created a scale where people can go and set their sexual orientations, such as it contains the person’s sexual behaviors with same sex or other sex. Sexual orientation is very important to an individual because it establishes who they are, such as being homosexual, asexual, bisexual, and heterosexual. Even though there are many pros behind Kinsey’s scale, some cons do exist.…
Since the beginning of earliest civilisation, man has relied on and surrounded himself with animals, for both assistance with labour and companionship. The phrase ‘man’s best friends’ is often used to described one of the most loyal and popular of these animals, the dog. Yet, in recent years, under the continued influence of rising dog attack numbers and societal pressure, new legislation has been introduced, collectively known as ‘Breed-Specific Legislation’. Under these new laws, certain breeds of animal are restricted or deemed dangerous, simply because of stereotypes associated with temperament and aggression. While many believe that this legislation is the most suitable response to a rapidly accelerating concern, further anaylsis…
