Charlie: A Short Story
Right from the start of when Charlie became smarter, I never knew why or how it could have happened. It was like he increased his IQ overnight. When Charlie was not smart and didn’t understand most things, Frank Reilly and I thought it was fun teasing him. The way Charlie looked clueless always made me laugh. He didn’t look offended so I didn’t feel an ounce of regret! Soon, all the guys at the factory made up the saying, “Don’t pull a Charlie Gordon!” This was our way of making fun of Charlie whenever someone did something that only Charlie would do. I still remember when we made him show off his skills as a janitor and he thought it was a good thing! I couldn’t stop laughing that night, but every since Charlie started to understand everything, everyone felt weird around him. …show more content…

He understood what everyone at the factory was saying and was able to figure out a new way to line up the machines in the factory. Donnegan was overjoyed because Charlie just saved him thousands of dollars and gave Charlie a bonus. All the guys at the factory and I felt weird and maybe a little afraid of Charlie. We had a bad feeling about Charlie because there is no way that someone like him could all of a sudden be this smart. Even though he seemed smarter, he still saw us as his friends and invited us out to lunch in celebration. Frank and I declined the invitation by giving really bad excuses, but he shrugged it off. After that, we stopped making fun of Charlie because how is it fun when he knows exactly what we are saying. All of the changes Charlie is going through concerned everyone at the factory, so we started a petition to get Charlie fired. Everyone and I mean everyone at the factory signed the petition except Fanny Girden. She has always been the odd one and even after many threats and persuasions, she still didn’t sign the petition. I still didn’t feel any guilt because Charlie’s changes is very strange. How is it even

Being a psychiatrist, I have heard a lot of crazy stories, but my friend Charley’s story is by far the craziest. I was sitting at my brown wooden desk in my small lavender smelling office when I heard a knock at the door. Knock. Knock. Immediately, Charley walked in wearing a tan gabardine suit, and a straw hat with a fancy black band. He had a smile from ear to ear and would not stop talking about the third level at Grand Central Station. A few minutes later, Charley asked, “Do you believe in time travel?” before I could answer he shouted, “Well I do! I was transported to 1894, but when I tried to purchase two coach tickets to Galesburg, Illinois, I didn’t have the right currency. Therefore, I went to the bank and drew out $300 and went to the nearest coin dealer and got less than $200 in old-time…

I love the characters because I can relate a lot to Charlie, since he’s a freshman in high school, like me. And how he was scared of High School. In the beginning of the book it said he was very quiet and really shy.in the beginning of the year I was really shy and quiet because I had to make new friends because all my friends went to Shephard High School. But we both had to make new friends because Charlie’s best friend, Michael, committed suicide. So, Charlie overcame that fear of going up to people and met Patrick and his step sister, Sam. Which later in the book and became best friends. “Mary Elizabeth: Charlie, Charlie, what do you think about high school? Charlie: High school? Bull$#!t. The cafeteria is called the Nutrition Center; people wear their leather jackets even when it's 98 degrees out. And why do they give out leather jackets to marching band? It's not a sport. We all know it. Mary Elizabeth: This kid is crazy. Charlie: Mary Elizabeth, I think you're really gonna regret that, you know. Charlie: haircut when you look back at old photographs. I'm really sorry. That sounded like a compliment in my head.” That excerpt was when Charlie went to high school for the first time and his friends asked him, how was his first day of school and he thought high school would be different. That’s how he is throughout the whole book, funny but shy.…

In the beginning of the film, Charlie struggles with making friends in the first couple of days of his freshman year. Charlie adapts and interacts well with people and is able to make friends easily and quickly. Chbosky portrays this idea in the wide angle shot of the large crowd in the football game, when Charlie approached Patrick and says “Hey Patrick”. "Hey, you're in my shop class”, says Patrick. Eventually Charlie is told to sit next to him and they continue their friendly conversation and with time meets a girl named Sam. From then onwards they made good friends and was later introduced to more people. Chbosky highlights the fact that Charlie becomes easily able to seek a conversation with someone in front of a large crowd, from which then lead to an invitation to his first ever party. At the party Charlie became emotional after realising the fact that he was being noticed and appreciated by the group of his presence. Patrick raised his drink and asked everyone to do the same. “To Charlie” and the whole group said, “To Charlie". Chbosky shows in the wide shot angle of when Charlie was drinking his milkshake and sitting on a lower level than his two other friends, that he has become recognised by the group, being the centre of attention by being himself, he gains the trust of others and is told important secrets compared to his original life. Charlie demonstrates the benefits of being a wallflower…
