Attenborough’s Cinematic Devices
Richard Attenborough, director of the movie Chaplin, told the story of Charlie Chaplin using a variety of different cinematic devices. These devices helped unfold the complex life of Charlie on the big screen. Attenborough moved the storyline from past to present while Charlie first handedly told us about his past life. He also used a change of camera angles so the viewers understand relationships between characters and emotions. Richard Attenborough accomplished this by using the cinematic effect of black and white, flashback and flash forward, and the choice of camera angles.
Attenborough uses color to show the past and present and to let the viewers know when he is showing real footage of Charlie Chaplins actual films. When real footage of his movies are showing, they are shown in black and white. An example would be when Charlie goes up on stage to accept his award at the end of the movie. Its a montage of all his films put together for the award show and they are Chaplins real movies. The moment when they are showing the montage is a really special moment for Charlie. He thinks everyone in america hates him but when the movie plays he sees that is not the truth. Another scene where Richard uses black and white is when Charlie goes to America for the first time. The color switches to black and white to show actual immigrants coming to America for the first time as well. It really captures the emotion of the scene and makes you feel it as well.
Next, Richard Attenborough also uses the cinematic device flashback and flash forward.
Throughout the movie, it will flashback and flash forward from Charlie at an old age to when he was young. It gives the viewers the effect of Charlie telling the story of his personal life through his eyes.
