This novel captured my interest and held it to the final chapter! I not only learned about the history of World War II, but also of the emotional impact it had on soldiers and their families. The Gunderman family was a family devoted to each other. The realization that their oldest son, Jimmy, had to fight for his country was devastating to them. The main character, Earl, was the younger half-brother. He described himself as the weaker of the two. He and Jimmy were close and enjoyed being together. He vividly detailed the emotional struggles they went through as a family during the war and how they overcame the struggles together by trusting in each other.…

The Vietnam War was not short of its share of controversies and opposition; However, March 16, 1968 marked a particularly dark moment for both Vietnam and the U.S. military. The barbaric torture, rape, and murder of around 400 unarmed civilians by Charlie Company in ‘Pinkville’, though initially covered up, left an extensive paper trail gathered at length and compiled by James S. Olson and Randy Roberts in My Lai: A Brief History with Documents. Olson and Roberts include testimonies from the tardy investigation of key participants as well as survivors to paint an accurate image of the events leading up to, during, and after the massacre, and attempts to objectively examine the question of culpability. Michael Bilton and Kevin Sim do not veil…

This movie is an example of heroes who are willing to help out even people out of their country. You would think that Charlie is a congressman out of a little part of Texas, who talks the talk, but doesn’t walk the walk and can’t really do much, but you realize how quickly things change when you know powerful people. First of all, you got to give credit to Joanne for motivating Charlie in the first place, because without her, it would have been a different story. Also, when he sees the hurt and hungry Afghans in the refugee camps, it sparks up a flame in him for his existing hatred towards the Russians. There was another person that came into the picture of Charlie’s life by motivating him by the name of Gust, who was a CIA member trying to partner up with Charlie.…

The all black forces could operate only West of the Mississippi River because many Southerners still had a grudge against free black men and if they saw that they were in the army some people could turn violent. The main purpose that Congress established the Buffalo soldiers was to protect settlers in the West and to maintain the order and enforce the law. Also to lend a hand to settlers in building towns. Waking up from the American Dream in Going after Cacciato (Tim O'Brien) What passing-bells for these who die as cattle? Only the monstrous anger of the guns. Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle Can patter out their hasty orisons. (from Anthem for Doomed Youth, Wilfred Owen) Sassoon's epitaph "All Soldiers are dreamers" at the beginning of the novel functions as a signpost signaling the shape the novel will take. It does not merely deal with brutal horror, it is imagination. Reality and dream, fact and imagination are interwoven. The choice of Siegfried Sassoon suggests the Great War, the English experience of war, which can be compared to the American Vietnam experience, for it had the same impact: total disorientation and national trauma…
