Before Charlie gets this operation he was pretty happy, had a decent job, and some friends. He lost all of these things because of the operation. He was miserable and “more alone than ever before” (Keyes, 72) There was a petition at his old job to get him fired, which made him feel even
worse. He wasn’t happy anymore because he was seeing the world as it really is for the first time.
He lost interest in socializing because he could not communicate with normal people anymore. Anytime he tried, anything he said was too complex and people couldn’t understand. So, he just gave up on it completely. This caused him to miss two months of rent on his apartment. He didn’t go anywhere, just stayed inside all day every day.
