Respond to the following based on the information in the “Suicide Rates by Age Group” article:
1. What has been the trend in suicide rates over the past few years? Adolescent suicide has increased 1970 and 2002. The peak for suicide was in 1994 at 13.8 per 100,000. The 2002 rate has declined to 9.9. Adult suicides for these periods are similar for ages 25 to 44 and 45 to 64. There has been a steady decline in both groups in recent years since the peak in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The greatest decline is seen in the 65 years old plus population suicide rate. Here there has been a steady decline since the mid 1980’s. This group suicide rate peaked in 1987 at 21.7 per 100,000 people. This represents a reduction at 15.6 in the year 2002. The overall suicide trend in the United States among all age groups has declined notably between 1970 and 2002.
2. What part of the U.S. has the highest suicide rate? The part of the U.S. that has the highest suicide rate would be in the Western U.S. with rates such as 14.7 per 100,000.
3. List three risk factors for suicide. Three factors for suicide would be access to firearms, a person who has been diagnosed with major depression, bi polar disorder, or a history of substance abuse, a lastly history of suicide attempts.
4. Many researchers worry that suicide rates for adolescents and older adults continue to increase. What does the research data show about these age groups? The research data indicates that both older adult and adolescent groups have shown a steady decline since the 1980’s.
5. In the U.S., what demographic has the highest rate of suicide? Older white males are shown to have the highest rate.
6. List four possible reasons for the observed decrease in suicide rates. Four possible reasons for the observed decrease in suicide rates include: The economy, substance abuse at all time lowest, life expectancy has increased, and lower homicidal rates.
