We serve all of our teams, as well as our school and community. Coordinating and carrying out all of these tasks can become exhausting to the team. Since the cheerleaders are always serving others, I, as a captain, strive to always serve the cheerleaders. I achieve this goal by several different means. On many teams, younger cheerleaders would be expected to set up mats, poms, signs, and megaphones for practice. However, on our team, the other senior cheerleaders and I make it a point to arrive at practice fifteen minutes early and set up so the others will not have to. In fact, I always like to employ a “first in, last out” mentality for practices and games. Because many parents on our team work during the day, I always make sure that every cheerleader has a ride home after games and practices. If they do not, I drive them to…
I am a High School Varsity Cheerleader. Yes, one of those girls who prisses around in a short skirt, ponytail bobbing from side to side and a grin the couldn't possibly get any bigger. I might be recognized as a bobbsy air head who stands on the side lines, looks pretty while only responding to the commands "Ready? Ok!" Well, believe it or not I'm not one of THOSE girls. I'm just like every other athlete breaking a sweat to become the best. My senior year of high school I made the Varsity Cheerleading squad. If that wasn't enough I wanted more. I wanted to be the person every girl envied. I wanted to be the captain. If that were to happen I had to prove that I was a well rounded girl who excelled at being responsible, has dedication, teamwork,…
Allstar Cheerleading is not like cheerleading for your school. It is much more excruciating than standing on a sideline, clapping and yelling "Go Team Go!" From experience, Allstar Cheerleaders go through grueling practices of sweating, long periods of conditioning, and lifting people. Yes, i said it, people. Football players condition so that they can run back and forth on a field for a few hours with breaks every couple of minutes. Cheerleaders condition so that they can make it through a to and half minute routine that includes orderly running from formation to formation, jumping in certain ways that require extreme flexibility and muscular strength, as well as lifting girls, the same age and weight as that of the girls lifting them above their heads so that the flyer can pull a motion that takes months to achieve. I don't know if you or a friend have…
It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…
Cheerleading is a dangerous activity. The main objective is for young girls not go into a competitive squad because they could get very hurt and have no time to themselves. Cheerleaders from 1A universities and competition squads have done surveys and tests to see basic information such as how much time is used for practices, ways the cheerleaders get hurt, types of injuries, location, and injury frequency Research has shown that over 50% of all catastrophic injuries in women’s sports alone has been caused by cheerleading. Guidelines and policy should be stricter to the guidelines of injuries just as if cheerleading was any other sport.…
I have joined many extracurricular activities in school such as, Cross Country, Track, National Honor Society and UIL math competitions. From all this clubs I have been the leader for Track and Cross Country. I was the captain for track when I was in 10th grade also I have been the leader for cross country since my junior year. While leading this teams there were some obstacles we overcame as a team. We was not fast enough to win anything during my first year of leading the team, we was not as famous as we are now. We did not had many supporters in the arena we compete in also our own school kids did not knew us, all they knew were the football team, basketball and soccer team. This really upset me because I and my teammates deserved to be…
Starting from the introduction to the relationships currently held with the fellow cheer squad; also known as cheer try-outs. My enthusiasm for wanting to be a CAU panther cheerleader curved my ability to judge characters during the first days of rehearsal. But once the final verdict came to be on the roster for the squad for the upcoming season, as if the façade of benevolent role models had diminished, thus revealing the true dominating alliances that quickly became apparent. It became a rivalry of “new “girls vs. “old” girls with me being herded into the inferior group. The returning members having the upper hand in any cheer decision. Being that they have more knowledge of the material making the “old” girls far more qualified to be in their position. This gives them the leverage to mistreat and in many cases blatantly disrespect the new members as strengthening exercises. Hazing is the true word for it.…
At the college level both the university and the NCAA have a reputation of determined what sports to field based upon interest, expenses, and potential financial success of the sports. But as seen at other university who provided scholarships for cheerleading there is a way to for it be NCAA sanctioned. But it the case of Quinnipiac “ a U.S. district court in Connecticut ruled Wednesday that Quinnipiac’s competitive-cheerleading squad cannot be used to meet Title IX requirements. The ruling may affect other NCAA institutions interested in sponsoring competitive cheer as a varsity sport” [2]. Cheerleading is to women as football is for men, there both sports that only the respected sex majority plays and there is not competitive equivalent for the opposite sex. If a women wanted to play football at the collegiate level there is not are football but a women can later play professional in women arena football leagues. If a man wanted to be cheerleader he plays an important role in many of the routine that the females…
Many people do not consider cheerleading to be a sport, even though the athleticism required and the danger involved in the activities performed still are not considered to make this a sport, but cheerleading meets all of these aspects but it’s not getting the sports status. Not only is cheerleading a sport but it is one of the most difficult and dangerous sports in the world. According to researcher Wayne Drehs, in the magazine “Athletes include cheerleaders.” It has become a great argument in which cheerleading should have the sport status. Cheerleading is a school activity with gifted young athletes that work just as hard as any other sport.…
I am 100% content on my cheer mat. The cheer mat has created so many memories for me. After being on this mat everyday for 5 years, I always know there is a place to come to when things aren’t going so well for me. This mat has made me endure everything from pain to complete and utter joy. Being part of a team that I know I can count is the best thing I’ve ever known. Throughout the five years of being together, we’ve accomplished a lot more than people thought we would. In the beginning we were very ammature, but we did have what looked like potential. As the years continued to go on, we were 6 points away from going to regionals. As this year continues, our ultimate goal is to make it to regionals, or even farther.…
In fourteen short years of life, I have accomplished a few things: starting a cheer team at my previous high school, playing several years of basketball, and having my bill pass in my first Youth in Government program. Sports have always been a staple part of my childhood and early adolescence; I have cheered for 3 years and played basketball for an additional 3 years. I have dedicated my time to cheer and basketball; the second, fourth, and sixth grades were devoted to basketball while the third, eighth, and ninth grades were devoted to cheer. This year is my sophomore year in high school and I became part of the Youth in Government program at my school. In cheer, I had to choreograph dances, teach cheers, and help manage the other cheerleaders.…
As the varsity cheerleading captain, it is my responsibility to show sportsmanship and school spirit whenever I am performing at games. However, I bring this pride in my school with me wherever I go; not just at games. I show school spirit at pep assemblies and other school events, always cheering on my fellow students and encouraging them. I truly care about the school as well, keeping up to date on the minutes from the board meetings and asking my parents about the boosters meetings. If there is ever an improvement that I think could be made or something that could be changed to benefit Dakota, I am quick to bring it up. I take pride in our school grounds as well, always respecting the property and encouraging my peers to do as well. I also am very avid about giving back to the community in any way that I can, as they have done so much for our school over the…
It was currently six o'clock pm on a Sunday night, I was on my way to cheer practice. I have been on the this cheer team since I was four years old. The coach I had was mean, and I hated her. And I didn't like the team I was on. I never felt really safe going to the practices or cheering for the team. So when I got to practice I started stretching, I had to stretch so I wouldn't pull a muscle or break a bone. Then it was time to stunt. I didn’t like stunting because I was the flyer, usually the flyer is the smallest or lightest person on the team but I had to do it anyways. My bases and backspots threw me up in a couple toe touch baskets.…
Through my experiences in several different clubs and activities, dance is one I hope to sustain in college. Although Dance Team is the most difficult thing I have been a part of, it has also been the best and most rewarding. The five-hour Sunday practices preparing for nationals, the breathless moments after doing our pom routine five times in a row as we lay exhausted on the dusty gym floor; dance has taught me a lot about dedication and working towards my goals. Dance is all about creating a connection with your teammates and “dancing as one”, but beyond the dance-floor I have built inseparable bonds with every girl . They’re not only my teammates, but my sisters. The Dance Team will always hold my best high school memories, and I would…
When it came to cheerleading, you had to put 100 percent into everything you did. Even when you would give 100 percent effort, you were never promised 100 percent satisfaction. We worked hard at practices but ended up with second place at competitions. This tore the…
