The sport of cheerleading is the 3rd most dangerous sport in the world. “According
to the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injuries, female cheerleaders make up a whopping 50% of the catastrophic head, neck and spine injuries that are suffered specifically by female athletes.” Cheerleading is more dangerous than most sports and has what it requires for what it is to be considered a sport. Google says, “An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” This is exactly what cheerleading is. Cheerleading has what it is to be defined as a sport.
Cheerleading is often seen as an activity. But cheerleaders spend hundreds of hours conditioning, stunting, tumbling, jumping, and dancing. The athletes get injured often and some have been unable to return to cheerleading because of their injuries. The ‘sport’ is as rigorous and risky as any other sport. Although cheerleading may be dangerous, it is a lot of fun. The feeling after your team has been annonced as first place is incredible. Although, cheerleading requires hard work, skill, and talent. There have been many advancements in the industry. “Some states are now officially recognizing cheerleaders as ‘student athletes’.” Some states have started to consider cheerleaders as athletes, which will make improvement in equality as other sports.
For more gender equity and equality for sports, you can do a lot of things. First, you can write a letter/email to the ‘The American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators’, (http://aacca.org/default.aspx) or ‘Varsity’, (http://www.varsity.com/) calling for more regulations and attention as an official sport. Second, you can go to your school administration and ask for advancements in your school’s cheerleading team. Cheerleaders are athletes; not stereotypes. Cheerleaders work hard and put in tons of effort into what they do. Sometimes they get injured for what they do. Cheerleading has extremely rigorous training and has many risks as any other sport does. Cheerleading should be considered as a sport because the cheerleaders are very hard-working and deserve to be an official sport.
