Topic: Temperature fluctuations to chemiluminescence
The scientist’s project topic revolves around changing the environment in which chemiluminescence occurs in. Can the Fluctuation in temperature of the chemiluminescence environment affect the chemical reaction? The scientist’s independent variable is the temperature of water in degrees fahrenheit ,and their dependent variable is which glow stick wears down the fastest in hours ,some of …show more content…
the constants are the same type of water will be used throughout, same cups ,and the scientist will be conducting the experiment on the same day ,the scientist’s control will be a glow stick with no water and no temperature fluctuation.
The hypothesis the scientist will be trying to test is that since most chemical reactions have a better or more improve reaction when heat is add ,he will be observing the hot water cup to see if his hypothesis is correct.
Similar projects have been test and most of their results conclude in using a freezer to keep the chemiluminescence reactions duration ,for example “Freezing the glow stick stops the chemical reaction and seems to recharge them to a degree”(K.W.N 5-30-2014).
The Scientist still feels like the heat fluctuation will still have a greater effect on the duration of the chemiluminescence reaction because it will not slow it down to a point where it might just stop it. One of the most important key terms in the scientist project is chemiluminescence which means ,” a very efficient process that converts energy to light” (Keren Perles 2012). This project is very dangerous because “23% of all cases of exposure to chemiluminescent products reported to an urban poison control center” ( Robert L. Hoffman 2002). It can be a very dangerous project if the scientist doesn't know what he is doing. Glow sticks have also been a great project inducer in the marine field. Glow sticks have been a very effective bait “Glow sticks have been mentioned briefly in the literature as a means to increase capture rates of aquatic amphibians” (Kristine L. Grayson 1996). In this process of chemiluminescence what happens “in Chemiluminescent Systems wherein a hydrogen peroxide component and an oxalate ester-fluorescer component are mixed and reacted to produce light” (Victor B World
1985).
Glow sticks are very unreliable but in the scientist project we will see how it is affected by temperature. If the scientist is able to tamper with the duration of the glow stick he might be able to create a contraption to make glow sticks last longer. Over as glow sticks become more sophisticated these days there might be some glow sticks that already last a long time.
