Purpose: The purpose was whether to see if a substance can either be a reactant or product in a chemical reaction, and if a new substance would be produced due to chemical reactions.
Materials:
- pyrex test tube 13 x 100 mm
- 100 ml beaker
- wire gauze, ceramic centered
-1.0 M copper (II) nitrate
-1.5 M sodium hydroxide
-1.5 M hydrochloric acid
-12 cm piece of aluminum wire
Procedure:
In the beaker, heat 50 ml water make three marks from bottom to top on the test tube that are one cm apart
Add 1.0 M copper (II) nitrate to the first mark
Add 1.5 M sodium hydroxide to the second mark, and mix. Observe and feel the tube for any heat released. put test tube in the beaker, and turn off burner only when no more changes occur. The results you get obtain are copper(II) oxide and water.
Turn off the burner and remove test tube and cool for two minutes in room temperature water. Add 1.5 M hydrochloric acid to the third mark and mix with stirring rod.
Place the aluminum wire in the test tube and leave it until no more reaction is observed. Touch and observe the tube for any changes.
Remove wire and observe the copper formed.
