Chemo Informative Speech
On March 2016, I get a call from my mom saying "get to the hospital now." I kept asking "what's going on," but she kept ignoring my question. "Your grandmother is getting chemotherapy. Just get to the hospital as fast as you can." Chemo? But she's been cancer free for 4 years, why is she having chemo again? I race to the hospital, she's in surgery getting chemo implanted into her spine, and all of my family's eyes are red, they've been crying. My mom sits me down and tells me that even though 2 months before, she was claimed to be cancer free, it has spread into her spinal fluid. The doctor told us she would have 6 months if she was lucky. The cancer in her cerebral spinal fluid was building up on her brain and causing pressure. A few days

Talking about diabetes in one thing. Talking about diabetes while it waits your doorstep is a whole other story. I live with a high risk of diabetes. Countless members of my family have been diagnosed with this disease and some have passed away because of it. Diabetes runs through both sides of my family. My paternal grandmother, my maternal grandfather, my maternal grandfather’s brothers, and my maternal grandmother’s older sister all suffer from the same disease. For all of them, the daily routine never changed. They all swallowed pill after pill and conducted blood test after blood test. To this day, I still remember watching them swallow pills the size of almonds and cringing whenever they pricked themselves to conduct a blood test. I…

Eventually they concluded that cancer was a possibility. The doctor also didn’t help with any of this new upcoming stress (but then again it’s not their job). He closed the door, hunched over in his seat, took of his glasses, and in a stern voice told me and my father “we don’t want to scare you but we might be looking at cancer here”. Of course my heart was ready to pound out of my chest due to the immense stress and fear of living with cancer. I’m already an anxious kid and now being told that I could have cancer just made me fear life in itself. Now picture this: you’re a 16 year old where everything is eventually taken away, no more baseball, positive vibes, and stress affecting my performance in school on top of being told I could possibly be living with cancer for the rest of my life. How would I make it anywhere in life when I couldn’t even think straight due to this fear and stress? However even with this news, I took some time to meditate and figure out myself. With this time I contemplated many depressing things. Such as how my funeral would be, who would be there, and who would be sad. With time the doctors confirmed that it was only a scare and that the source was something else that could be…

Imagine you’re having pizza with your friends. As you reach for a second slice, you think about your needle--and then you remember you don’t have to give shots anymore. Before, you couldn’t just eat whenever you wanted; before you had Type 1 Diabetes. Everyday you had to count carbohydrates and give the correct dosage of insulin for the predicted amount of carbs you might consume. In 2010 my mom was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. I remember the day well; I remember feeling afraid and confused- but mostly confused, as I was promised that my mom would be okay- that she would just be sick for a little while. I remember being told that my three year old sister wouldn’t understand, so I wasn’t to tell her anything. I remember hearing my mom cry as she told my grandparents her diagnosis- I remember feeling helpless. Fast forward two years, and the cancer was finally beaten; my mom was crowned the victor, and I pushed any thought of cancer into a deep recess of my mind. My mom’s hair grew to her shoulders, she smiled more, and once again became the happy mommy of my childhood. Then it was Thanksgiving of 2015. She had…
