In spite of the recent advances that have been made in the thoracic cross-section imaging, chest radiography remains the main diagnostic concept applied in dealing with pulmonary diseases. It is the frequent diagnosis performed for patient suspected of thoracic abnormalities. Since the discovery of X-ray, much technological advances have been made to improve chest radiography. Progresses in film based imaging have led to development in excellent screen film systems that are designed for chest radiography. More recent advancement in computer and electronic technology has led to rapid improvement in digital image receptors as well as displays. Some other development of image processing …show more content…
Hence, acquiring perceptual expertise is fundamental.
So as to be sure that a digital radiographic system gives its optimum result, the system needs to be installed and maintained as highly as possible and also monitored through quality control program. In addition to this, it is also important for the radiographers to be able to evaluate the acquired radiograph.
The physically measured parameters in the digital radiograph are the contrast to noise ratio that is employed as a contrast index as it does not require reference signal. Image contrast is highly affected by the scattered radiation as well as the contrast characteristics of the display system and receptor.
In addition to the image quality criterion, evaluation of more specified technical radiographic landmarks would be very important for quality interpretation. The structure types for evaluation are the lung structures like the vessels bones and the soft tissues, with all being seen in both projections but having to be evaluated at different locations. The radiographer should bear in mind that sharpness is highly evaluated where the tiniest normal structure are detected and on the other hand, noise is best evaluated in case of high level of scatter with the amount of noise
