just one problem fast food produces. In the article, ”Fast Food May Lead to Lower School Results for Kids”, the author explains the results that fast food may cause by stating, “The high level of fat and sugar often found in fast-food meals also can affect attention and reaction times.” This is important because in order to do well in school, one needs to be focused in order to succeed. Missing an assignment, notes, or even an explanation can be detrimental to one’s learning experience and grade. The author explains how the low amount of nutrients in fast foods may cause this. From personal experience, one may feel happier, attentive, and more awake in school by eating healthy food such as fruits and vegetables. Fast food doesn’t only make one’s mind unhealthy; it can put your body in poor condition. Fast food is very damaging to a person’s body. Fast food often has high calories, high fats, and high cholesterol. It can cause weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Did you know that a 7.5 ounce Big Mac from McDonald’s has 540 calories, 28 grams of fat (ten of those are saturated fats), 970 milligrams of sodium, 47 grams of carbohydrates, and 80 milligrams of cholesterol? This is according to the McDonald’s PDF that includes very frightening information regarding their food. Fast food can have a very negative impact on children. According to Healthline, an article, “The Effects of Fast Food on the Body”, tells the readers “...children who eat fast food at least three times a week are at increased risk of Asthma and Rhinitis, which involves having a congested, drippy nose.” Asthma and Rhinitis are very serious conditions that can potentially harm your body. In the book Chew on This, Schlosser explains Sam Fabrikant’s journey of going through gastric bypass surgery, which was most likely caused by his fast food intake. Sam’s obesity also may have also caused his asthma to worsen, which harmed his body even more, and proved that fast food may lead to poor health. Lowering school results, and making one unhealthy are important, but one of the most important reasons that fast food is harming our youth is it is damaging to one’s self-image.
According to Healthline, Acne and obesity can easily harm a person’s self-image and even their confidence. Chocolate and greasy foods are often blamed for the cause of acne. Did you know that the real problem is carbohydrates? Fast food is loaded with carbohydrates, which increase blood sugar levels that may cause acne. Sam Fabrikant, who is mentioned in Chew On This, wanted to go to his school’s prom, but he was too embarrassed to go because of his weight. While Schlosser explains Sam’s struggles, he states, “Their poor self-image and bleak view of the future was similar to that of children undergoing treatment for cancer”(213). This quote puts the seriousness of obesity into perspective by comparing it to cancer. It is hard to beat obesity if fast food is part of a person’s diet. A low self-image often creates depression or self-pity which makes it quite difficult to do active and healthy things. Fast food generates a very unhealthy cycle for children as well as
adults. Fast food is a major problem of our society. Some people believe that fast food doesn’t affect us directly, but they are wrong because fast food chains are targeting schools, and harming our future population. In the article “Fast Food Firms are Targeting Schools,” written by Danny Buckland and Lizzie Edmonds, the authors explain how chains are targeting near schools and colleges in order to make more money. While explaining why fast food chains buy these locations, the authors state, “The hunger for lucrative spots has inflated shop lease prices up to a fifth, with chains prepared to pay extra for the chance of guaranteed take-away profit.” Fast food is a major reason for short attention spans, poor health, and low self-images. Overall, fast food is harming our country, and especially harming our youth.
