Chiari Malformation Case Study
Although Chiari Malformation (CM) has been discovered over 100 years ago, this disorder still remains poorly understood. For instance, despite major advances in medical services and technology, central questions about the pathology and cause of CM lack clear-cut answers. Chiari Malformation type II, the most common form of the disorder (roughly 1 in 1000 births), is a rare and serious anatomic anomaly of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by portions of the brain and brainstem protruding into the foramen magnum. This situation illustrates the point that surgery is the most effective treatment to stop or impede the progression of damage to CNS in patients who suffer from Chiari Malformation.

When Hassan was a child he was born with a cleft lip and was fixed by Baba, who paid for a surgeon to fix on his birthday, because he is secretly his biological father and has a secret fatherly love for him. Later in the story, Amir gets his lip split by Assef when he gets beat up, leaving him with a scar like Hassan’s. Arterio-venous malformation (AVM) is a tangle of arteries and veins. It is most common in either a person’s brain or spinal cord. If it is located in a person’s brain there are few symptoms if any (Medline, 2013, 2). The most common symptoms include hemorrhages, seizures, headaches, and neurological problems. AVM is a rare condition and there are no known cause other than it develops during pregnancy or soon after birth. AVM can be seen on CT or MRI scans, but an angiography is needed to fully diagnose it. A hemorrhage is the most serious symptom, most are small but others are really big and life threatening, surgery is the best known and longest standing treatment, but it is very risky (AVM, 2013,…

Chiari Malformation occurs when the section of the skull housing the cerebellum is to small or is deformed, putting pressure on and crowding the brain. The lowermost portions, or the cerebral spinal tonsils, are displaced into the upper spinal canal. When the cerebellum is pushed into the upper spinal canal, it can interfere with the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that protects your brain and spinal cord. This impaired circulation of CSF can lead to the blockage of signal transmitted from your brain to your body, or to a buildup of spinal fluid in the brain or spinal cord. This pressure upon the spinal cord or lower…

The cause of agenesis of the corpus callosum is unidentifiable in many cases, but is thought to involve a vascular disruption or inflammatory lesion before 12 weeks. Certain medications such as Valproate, an epilepsy medication or drugs and alcohol are risk factors for this condition. Contracting rubella during pregnancy, chromosomal damage, and abnormalities like trisomy 21, 13, 11, 8 or 18 are also possible causes for ACC. Cysts inside the brain can prevent the development of the corpus callosum. The majority of ACC cases occur in conjunction with other brain abnormalities. The genetic disorders have a larger impact on the brain formation. Examples of these disorders are Arnold-Chiari malformation, Dandy-Walker syndrome, Schizencephaly, Holoprosencephaly, Hydrocephalus, Aicardi syndrome, Andermann syndrome, and…

“It is thus tolerance that is the source of peace, and intolerance that is the source of disorder and squabbling,” said the famous French philosopher Pierre Bayle. In the novel, The Chrysalids by John Wyndham, the characters Sophie, Sally, and Anne worry about tribulation when it comes to being “normal” and tolerated by people. The author demonstrates the intolerance of physical deformities, mental abnormalities, and the inferior treatment of women in the town of Waknuk.…

Birth defects, or congenital malformations, are the faulty formation of structures or body parts present at birth. Sporadic, hereditary, or acquired defects may be immediately observed or may become manifest later in life; they may be visible on the body surface or present internally. Birth defects may be life threatening and require surgical correction, or they may interfere with function or appearance. It is estimated that about 3% of all children are born with major defects; minor defects or variations are estimated to occur in 10% to 15% of births. Malformations may be single or multiple.…
