Restaurant Assignment I went to Chicago this weekend and my parents took me out for dinner, we went to Flaco’s Tacos. This is my favorite restaurant I have been going there since I was a kid. My parents know the owner well now, and he greets us at the door to be immediately seated. The first thing you notice when you walk in is how packed the restaurant gets on Sundays. This restaurant isn’t in the best neighborhood however people come from all parts of the city to eat the restaurants famous food. The owner is always working, he walks around talking to the customers asking how the food is and if he could get them anything else. After being seated our waiter greeted us and introduced herself, you can tell that all the works like working in the environment they are in. Also the selection on the menu is huge, I have tried a wide variety of the food on it and have liked it all. Going here a lot I have three favorite meals tacos with beans, eggs mixed with steak and beans, or a burrito. This time I got tacos and beans, while waiting for my food I took a look around to see some of the other customers. I noticed how everyone here enjoys the vibe in the restaurant. I could tell the people next to us were here for their first time, I know the owner noticed this also so he approached them and introduced himself and began to have a conversation with them. Listening in I found out they were from the north side of Chicago and they heard of this place from a family friend. Obviously this place is well heard of if not only its always packed but people recommend it to others. I started listening to the people seated behind us and I turned to see what they looked like, it was an older couple maybe in their seventy’s. You can tell the owner knows them well and that they are loyal customers. The owner talked to them for a while asking about their kids and how the retired life was. This speaks a lot about the owner, he memorizes his returning customer’s names and remembers what they talked about in previous conversations. After the conversation my meal came and it looked great. It only took ten minutes to prepare so it’s fast and well prepared. After everyone at my table go their food I dug in, I was the first finished and I was stuffed. Living in Iowa now I missed Chicago food and I was looking forward to going here all weekend. When everyone finished the owner approached our table once again and asked how it was and asked if we wanted anything else. We got the check and walked out, it was tough to weave through the crowd that was out the door. It’s not a five star restaurant but the customers are treated like it. Needless to say this place is well managed and has outstanding food.

The ones who were able to get seated, didn’t get their food fast enough. So they were displeased. As I observed all customers were no happy. One person at each table were aggravated and it showed on their face. The workers were very nice and pleasant. They would greet and take care of everyone apparently and promptly. When I would look into each of the relationships of each table, I would learn how a son and mother got along. I saw how he cared for her and how well he took care of her. Their nonverbal messages let me know what their relationship was and gave me reassurance that there are great children out…

At the moment when we got there, I saw a place that said “come in to real Mexican food” by just looking at the outside. At the moment I walked in I heard Mariachi music. As we are walking to our table, we could notice the decorations all inside the restaurant that makes people feel like they are part of the Mexican culture. They have mariachi hats, horse shoes, mariachi clothes, Mexican scarfs that are really pretty and colorful. You…

Complaining that he couldn’t read because of the dim lighting (though I would’ve complained about the small seating area that was barely substantial enough to fit all of our meals with our large drinks), food being too expensive, and the bread did not tasting that good, our highly customer praised avocado egg roll appetizer was mediocre and only tasted good when dipped in the “green sauce” as he puts it. I ate the most of the appetizer, and I couldn’t necessarily agree with him about sauce as it made sweeter. He also split a dish between him and my older sister which although had flavor was not that good, I couldn’t give an opinion myself only because I was busy munching away at my dish. The Crispy Chicken Costoletta did not meet the expectations between the two of…

Last week, an Asian family entered the restaurant and had been seated. After initially greeting them and getting their drink orders, the family had explained how they had been at another restaurant right before they came to eat at this one. They had to leave the other restaurant because after 40 minutes had passed, no server or any staff member had acknowledged the family, as they heard the staff fight over who was going to be stuck taking their table. Instead of observing the interactions that occur in my own restaurant, I chose to go to another restaurant in the area and listen in on what was going on around me. Our server was a polite girl, most likely a college student, and Caucasian. From a server’s standpoint, she was friendly, informative, and quick with everything that we had needed. A few minutes after we had been settled in, a table was sat behind us. It was an Indian family of four; the mother, the father, and two little boys. Listening in, it was shocking to find…

This outing has influenced my view of St. Louis in many ways. Before this outing, I did not know that St. Louis was home to a large number of refugees. As mentioned in class, most of my time is spent in the SLU bubble, so I have never been exposed to the different ethnic cultures within the city. I enjoyed learning about the diversity within St. Louis, and I am excited to explore new ethnic restaurants. Also, this fact about St. Louis resonated with me, due to the fact that Des Moines is also home to many Bosnian refugees. I attended grade school with children who had traveled to America to escape the Bosnian Civil war. In fact, there is a community of Bosnian refugees that live a few streets away from me. As a child, I did not understand the classifications of a refugee or why they choose…

I will be writing my final paper on Polish American Immigrants who settle in Chicago Illinois. I will be referring to Polish American Immigrants in this essay as (Poles) periodically. The majority of Polish immigrants emigrating to the United States of America was in the 1800’s. This period was considered the first out of three waves of Polish immigrants to settle in America. The first major wave was between 1800 and 1860, many of the emigrating Poles were fleeing for America because of political revolution in their homeland. Many Poles liked the idea of a self governing political system that The United States of America had to offer. The Polish people had to endure many hardships in their homeland of Poland. From civil wars, political uprisings, and occupations from enemy countries (Germany, Russia, Prussia) invading their homeland. Along with these invasions and occupations came persecution of the Polish people. “This group fled their country mainly because of political insurrections. The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service have estimated that fewer than 2,000 Poles immigrated during this wave.” (Into America) They sought refuge and a new life in America. During this wave it is estimated that 0nly 2,000 Poles had immigrated to America.…

Right in front! Just twenty yards away from Quality Leadership University’s front door, I had one of the most enjoyable gastronomical experiences in my life. It all happened after looking for a nice place to eat when I stumbled upon the Korean restaurant Pasion al Carbon. I must say that Pasion al Carbon is not like other Asian restaurants that we’ve seen in Panama, in which the owners barely speak to you. In fact, the Korean lady in charge of the place, whose name I can’t even pronounce right, provided such a pleasant treatment during my stay. Furthermore, I was able to establish a long conversation with this cheerful lady in which she described in great detail, the wide variety of Korean food she prepares at the restaurant. But from all the…

It was a nice hot summer when my parents decided to a fancy Chinese restaurant, which recently open near our house and since I was 6, I didn’t know much about Chinese food and how there are so many varieties of Chinese food there are. At first I was nervous because of how the place looked, not that it was scary but how the place looked alive by how it was decorated with its brilliant pattern with colors radiating mostly all color of the spectrum. Then we were taken to our table and were given a complimentary drink, which was tasteless and odorless but refreshing. There we many people there and were ordering many varieties of foods, that I have never seen before. Then my…
