General Overview
Chicago is the metropolis of Illinois, located in the North East corridor at a latitude of 41.85 and longitude of -87.65, 237 square miles of land, and 180 meters above sea level. The city of Chicago incorporated in 1837. According to Encyclopedia of Chicago (2005):
Community Area 8, 1-mile N of the Loop. The Chicago River and Lake Michigan form three edges of the Near North Side. The different uses that Chicagoans made of these bodies of water divided the Near North into an expensive residential strip in the east and an industrial, low-income area in the west (p. 1).
The near north side is a melting pot of the rich, middle class, and poor and filled with historic architectural treasures, picturesque parks, beautiful lake front and boating docks. The Gold Coast neighborhood is in the east region of the near north side and houses two Chicago treasures – the original Water Tower and a statue of Chicago’s founder Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable.

1). When thinking of the Gold Coast, some key sights come to the forefront: Water Tower, Magnificent Mile, Lakefront, and Navy Pier. Additionally, many of the Gold Coast architectural buildings, mansions, and homes are registered in the National Historical Registry.
Place Relevance
The Gold Coast house three honored architecture styles: Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque, and the Georgian Revival. However, the John Hancock building 12th largest building in the world nests within this community.
